O'Hare F.A.C.E. Project

Mon Jul 31, 2006 11:42 pm

I have a question for those who are familiar with the project. While driving up to the curbside check-in areas of each terminal, there are giant white (support beams?) present. My question is, is the ATS train being moved so that it runs above each terminal?

The ATS is staying put. What you see are the support columns for the new terminal canopy that will extend over the first two inside lanes of traffic at Terminals 2 and 3. The canopy at Terminal 3 is pretty much finished, but Terminal 2's is taking longer. The ATS will stay on the other side of the road, but the ATS bridges to T2 and T3 are going to be modified to include new escalators that will connect them to the expanded terminal.

Part of the project also includes widening the ticket lobbies by about 40 feet, filling in the old "courtyards" between the roadway and terminal building. If you've been inside the finished portions of T3, you'll see that it really makes a huge difference - there's a lot more circulation space now.

Unfortunately, the project is taking FOREVER to complete. It was supposed to be done in 2005, and they're just now about halfway through it.

As an aside, does anyone know why Terminal 3 - and ONLY Terminal 3 - has Jersey barriers blocking the first lane of traffic on the departure level? T1, T2 and T5 all have the inside lane available for passenger drop-off, but for some reason T3 keeps their lane closed off. It makes for horrible traffic jams in the evenings.

Yes ATS is staying put. The project is nice, T2 used to look like the ghetto but its getting better every time I go to work, with the new ceilings and floors. Over by the NW check-in, you can see the old ORD, walk to the CO check-in, you will see the new ORD, interesting comparison, it will all be new soon.

Also to add, Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 will be apart of the Inline system which T5 is already integrated into.

With the exception of Delta, ALL X-ray machines in T1 and T3 will be moved out and the TSA for baggage screening will take place under the Terminals. This will give massive room to T3. In T5 recheck no longer exist. When bags come in on International flights and need to be screened for connecting flights, the passengers hand over their luggage to AA or UA and they will send them up the belt to the TSA with new faster X-ray machines. Passengers no longer need to wait in long lines to recheck luggage. Departures for T5 will take longer as they can't seem to make up their mind if they want to make Departures Inline or put new X-ray machines there(they would have to re-enforce the floor). Anyone who has flown out of T5 knows we had to check those bags by hand.

Once these changes to T3 and T1 are made things should really move along faster and more space will be added to the Terminals. Now T3 will be up hopefully by January. T1 is a year behind or so, so that might take awhile. They are building new belts for this and all.

Carry on!

Does T3's baggage claim look like a dump still? last time I was there, it looked absolutely horrendous. T2 also looks horrendous.

The new parts are lovely. There's a new escalator down by Concourse L now which is especially nice.

Something else they added, it's sorta off topic here, is a cool feature. the cell phone parking lot.

they added a free parking lot which is a bit far away, but drivers can wait there, be on call, and then head over to the arrival lanes to pick up people.

Simple yet effective idea...

Actually, Terminals 2 & 3 have been in the midst of some major construction and/or renovation project since the day they were opened in the early sixties. The Democratic Party of Cook County's "patronage machine" just love's O'Hare. Big grin
