Check out the temporary livery and new photos of Trans Atlantic Airlines. It's nice to see the L1011 being prepared for flight again.

Beautiful! This news comes as I heard that Global is flying a restored AT L1011 from Montreal to the middle east. Hope this company is going to eventually come up with a new paint scheme. Seeing the Delta colors on a flying Tristar is great and all but a nice new paint job would be even better.

If anyone really believes this bird is going to fly anytime soon as a Trans Atlantic Airlines scheduled carrier to Africa, take a look at this press release from ARC (Airlines Reporting Corporation), an industry-wide ticketing distribution network:

http://www.arccorp.com/news/news_pr0340.html

Excerpt:
"Trans Atlantic Airlines will launch its maiden flight on October 30, 2003."

In addition, the new photos show the sloppiest temporary livery (or should I say "stickers") ever applied to a commercial aircraft in the history of aviation!

Good luck to them and to anyone that gives them a credit card number.

As per website:

TransAtlantic Airlines, based in New York, is preparing N723 in Victorville for its first flight since landing at Victorville in 2001. Ship 723 is the first former Delta L1011 being reactivated for revenue service across the Atlantic from New York's JFK International Airport. Plans include operating the L1011, re-registered to TransAtlantic airlines, from JFK to destinations in West Africa and within Africa.

Here's a link to Trans Atlantic's Inauguration reception:

http://africanevents.com/TransAtlanticAirlines.htm

This version of the route structure is as follows:

"Service Route: JFK to Lagos via Freetown. Monday through Thursday"

A few months later, the ARC press release said this:

"Trans Atlantic Airlines will operate service between New York (JFK) and Freetown, Sierra Leone and Banjul, The Gambia, with continuing flights to Lagos, Nigeria".

I'll believe this one when British Airways brings back Concorde and then introduces "Deluxe 2-stop service between New York Idlewild and London Heathrow with updated Super-Constellations".

Enough said.

I would not hold my breath for this one. Check out DOT filings.

Looks like they tried back in 2003 and received authority to serve several point in West Africa using a 3rd party carrier. However their application was withdrawn in 2004 due to "outstanding commercial disputes" involving courts in the US, UK and Sierra Leone.

Nothing else has been filed with the DOT since then, let alone an air carrier certification process to fly their own aircraft.

And here's the latest version of Trans Atlantic Airlines:

http://www.africa-ata.org/kambi.htm

Excerpt:

"This newly formed airline carrier is the only scheduled direct airline carrier to West Africa from JFK International Airport in New York and Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C. to Lagos, Nigeria; Banjul, The Gambia; Freetown, Sierra Leone; and Dakar, Senegal. According to the Chairman and CEO of Trans Atlantic Airlines, Chief I.J.O. Njoku, a Nigerian national and New York-based entrepreneur with a strong track record in real estate development, "This new airline service will be highly focused on the expansion of U.S.-Africa market requirements and promises to restore the comfort, reliability and affordability of traveling to West Africa as it was meant to be. Passengers to West Africa currently have to connect through Europe with 7-8 hours layover, coupled with higher ticket costs. Trans Atlantic Airlines has shortened the amount of time in half required to fly to West Africa with direct routes and superior services for its customers. Overall, Trans Atlantic Airlines promises no delays, no hassles, no transit visas, and most importantly, no luggage will be left behind."

Trans Atlantic Airlines will operate from New York twice weekly to Lagos via Banjul and once a week to Lagos via Freetown. The JFK International Airport (New York) service will commence on October 30, 2003. Trans Atlantic Airlines will operate once a week from Washington, D.C. to Lagos via Dakar as well as once a week to Lagos via Freetown. The Dulles International Airport (Washington, D.C.) service is scheduled to commence on December 8, 2003. In addition, Trans Atlantic Airlines will be operating from Houston International Airport directly to Port Harcourt in Nigeria via Banjul. This service is expected to commence in December 2003. Chief Njoku has successfully assembled a senior management team for the airline carrier with more than 160 combined years of proven expertise and experience in the airline industry to include SAS, World Airways, Gulf Air, Air India and Kuwait Airways. Trans Atlantic Airlines will operate a state-of-the-art Airbus A330-300 wide body aircraft with forty-two reclining flat bed seats and 236 premium economy seats with ample luggage space to truly satisfy the needs of the leisure traveler and the business traveler as well as the ethnic traveler to the above-mentioned West African destinations. Trans Atlantic Airlines is an Airlines Reporting Corporation (ARC) participant as well as a member airline of the International Airlines Travel Association (IATA). Trans Atlantic Airlines" airline industry code is KC/448 and its schedules and fares are now available in Galileo, Sabre, Worldspan and Amadeus."

I'll let everyone know when they order 6 A380's for their new shuttle service to Harare, Zimbabwe.

I'm with BatonOp's on this. The TriStar is and always will be my favorite aircraft!!!

A lot of people complain about the decal and livery, but I think its just splendid. I wonder why? I guess my dream of having an L-10 returned to service in Delta colors(somewhat) has come true. Especially even down to the TriStar logo on the number 2 engine inlet. Gotta love that! I say fly them as is. cloudnine  Its just too bad that Trans-Atlantic will be an African carrier only flying to JFK.(sigh)

Long live the TriStar and the Delta Belle!!

As much as I love the L1011, and would love to see them up and running again I have to agree with the skeptics and say that something doesn't smell right here. This new "operator" seems shady as hell, and the fact that they aren't even painting the plane is a red flag.

This isn't going to happen. North American is already flying JFK-ACC, JFK-Banjul, BWI-Banjul and JFK-Lagos, with a 763.

Delta is going to come in on JFK-ACC soon, which will probably push NAO off that route. Sadly, they won't be using L1011s, but they will be on the route. Given that kind of competition, these guys are toast.

Anything with "Africa" equates to "Con Game" in the venture capitol world. This is such a sham that it should be on the Dave Chappell show! They blew a whopping $40 bucks on the stick on letters... sure looks like a serious venture to me! Don't even bother to fill in the gaps in the cheat line, just let um' go. I would rather call this thing the Fred Sanford special than the African Queen!

I knew this name sounded familiar, I remember when this alleged start-up was posted here in '02'. Indeed, this sounds like another plan to scam money out of investors.

Not like this airline will really happen anyway, but what an indignity for a former Delta L1011 to suffer. Being resigned to operating for a slipshod carrier who no doubt would neglect it (i.e. all the other Nigerian carriers that like to drop their planes from the sky).

Better the plane be left in the desert or scrapped.

OK. I decidied to give this outfit the benefit of the doubt; so from one of the links above:

"Trans-Atlantic Airlines -
New York Office: 132 Nassau Street, Suite 411, New York, NY 10038
Tel: 212-233-9200"

When I called the number and pressed 2 for reservations, I got an answering machine instructing me to "Please leave a message for User ID 402".

Then I carefully read the Inaugaration Reception link and discovered this precious bit of information:

"The blessing of the kola nut was done by Chief Obilor..."

i don't mean to be critical of any particular cultural custom, but these bozos are going to need more than a blessed nut to get that L-1011 flying to Africa.

What a joke!

I have to agree. That is an old domestic interior! Even in it's last days that interior and bulkhead look like something out of the 60's. Don't mean to be skeptical either, but it is just completely tacky not to do a complete new paint job, just look where the Delta widgets are missing!

For you L1011 lovers out there, I never felt good flying in that airplane. Every time it took off, landed or hit turbulence, felt like it would fall apart. Give me a DC-10 or MD-11 anytime! Sorry, but there are others who feel like that also.

N723DA is an L-1011-40 with only about a 2900nm range. This aircraft doesn't even have the range to make it to West Africa non-stop!!

I won't even begin to discuss how hopeless it is to try to run an L-1011 with RB211-22B engines, let alone in a regular operation. They have no support, no spares, very poor reliability, and AD issues galore.

This whole thing sounds like a scam or a colossal pipedream for somebody with money to burn.

Nice to see how a supposed-member of IATA can't even properly state what IATA actually stands for... [International Air Transport Association].

Also read the link above and you can see another mistaken deciphering of what they think IATA stands for.

And if you go on IATA's website, there is no one listed as having code KC or 448.

Well that's rational.  scratchchin

FWIW, my uncle flew those things in the left seat from as soon as Eastern acquired them until they made him retire. He used to talk about how great an airplane they were. However one "feels" about riding in a modern, well-maintained aircraft, one really rationally shouldn't feel like the aircraft "would fall apart". ATP pilot friends certainly have commented about various things that make them more comfortable or less comfortable on a trip, but the integrity of the airframe has never been raised as a concern. Indeed, during that United mess a few years ago when they almost flew the 747 into the mountain in California, one of the bunkies in the cockpit said that the compressor stalls in the engine at rotation were so violent that for the first time in his career he was concerned about the integrity of the airframe, which is a comment that a pilot friend said got his attention because one doesn't really ever find one's self worrying about such things.

That said, given the near-impossibility of getting an L1011 with -22B engines flying regularly overseas with any kind of reliability (the ATA guy knows of what he speaks), I sure as heck wouldn't trust anybody other than a first-rate operator to produce a level of safety that we would expect here in the good ol' US. That aircraft has less range than a 757, so you can imagine the route it would have to take to get to Africa. Not pretty.

And, really now, who again is going to fly these guys when they can fly North American and, soon, Delta? Or connect through Europe on a reliable international carrier?

This plane is most likely still sitting in the desert as of 8-1-2006! Must not take much to buy the right to paste your name on the side of a hull there, as most of you know, Taco Bell painted the entire left side of a 747 at Victorville to look like Air Force One.... to film a freakin' mexican food commercial a few years back. Commercial was never shot but it shows you can gain the right to play with a jet as long as you don't attempt to enter and start it up, and pretend you are making a dandy new airline! Cheers Mates! See you all in Africa in trash class.

is this supposed to be related

???

They were all set to go three years ago? And were going to use A330s, according to the article? But now they are digging an aircraft out of the desert that is completely-unsuitable for nonstop service on this route, and that has engines that really can no longer be overhauled?

Nice fawning interview, by the way. I don't think that the referenced web site can be counted upon for the probing questioning that will be necessary to persuade me that this isn't some kind of scam.

Is there any possibility that they've scrounged up other 22B engines from other Delta birds? The whole range thing does seem a little disconcerting. You'd think they'd go with -500s or something that has engines still actively maintained and used, not to mention decent range. I will admit, the more I think about this, the more skeptical I've become. Those pesky -22Bs... is it not possible to re-engine them with something newer like has been done with DC8s?
