A3XX: Passenger Transporter Or Flying Mall?

I've seen and heard on various news stations that the A3XX will contain shops, bedrooms, spas, health and Beauty Salons etc......
Is this feasable on an aircraft ? Wouldn't all the electronics and related materials add considerable weight to the aircraft, or are the TV stations over exaggerating ?

As the A3XX will have 20% better seat mile costs than anything flying today the airlines will have two choices:

1. Using 20% of the space as gyms, etc. The fares stay the same.

2. Lowering the fares 20%

The A350 will not contain shops, cinemas, gyms, swimming pools or open fireplaces. It will have as many seats as you can squeeze into it, with a phone, TV screen and credit card swipe at every seat. There's your mall.

Virgin, EK and SQ may have a manicure / massage parlour on a slightly grander scale than on their current heavies, and maybe bedrooms (of a sort - more like a 180 degree reclining seat with a curtain around it) but the rest of it is pure fiction. Except maybe the wood burning fireplace, hee hee.

I'm sorry but I can't quit laughing. They'll use the extra seats as extra profit and maybe lower fares 1-2% if at all

Only one little problem, 777x - if the fares dropped by only 1-5%, then that means more empty seats for the airline operating A3XXs, unless the route had extremely high demand! Fares dictate load factors quite a bit. And vice versa. So, fares are not something any responsible airline would fool around with, unless they fly to places with little or no competition.

While airlines try to maximize profits whenevr they can, they still have to be careful. While it's true that lower fares may be good for the passengers and bad for the airline's revenues, airlines would risk more empty seats if the fares didn't drop by that much - and that means even less profit than an airline would make on a 747-400! The A3XX is a bigger plane with more seats and needs more fuel, more FAs and maintenence, and that's why the airline'd risk losing more money. That's also why a 10-20% drop in fares is reasonable.

But I do find the idea about extra space for gyms funny, especially in this age of high passenger traffic!

In the Airbus proposal to KLM, the mock-up interior contained "coffee shops" up top and a red light district in the cargo area. Who needs Branson anyway?

Seriously, Leahy and Foregard are on crack. How many people have died on 747s crossing the Pacific due to severe turbulence? At least 5-10 over the past decade. Now imagine 100-300 people out of their seats at the shops or hair dressers and the 350 hits equally severe turbulence...hello lawyers and adios $1-10 million per dead passenger.

I recall hearing the same types of things being proposed when the 747 was being designed in the 1960's. They never panned out because the industry's economics mitigate against it. My bet is the airlines who buy the A350 will try to stuff as many seats into the plane as they think they can get away with.

I heard on the rumor mill that several US mall management companies are interested in the A3XX for using it as a true flying mall, with a decent amount of shops, that would fly around the country to smaller towns without malls near them, and offer goods from shops which would be found in malls.

I've also heard rumors of WalMart doing this as well...

in this day and age, airlines will stuff in as many seats they can get away with, I could imagine a little track in the airplane for passengers to walk around but thats about it, and the cities that have all of the shops and everything are the only cities that are able to handle the A3XX!!!! i just see it as more seats
