Air Europa To Fly MAD-GIG

Tue Aug 01, 2006 11:12 am

As per Amadeus, Air Europa will begin service between Madrid Barajas and Rio de Janeiro Int'l Airport effective November 6.

Flight UX046 will depart on Mondays and Fridays from MAD at 14:00 and will arrive GIG ETD 21:50.

Flight UX045 will depart GIG same day at 23:50 arriving MAD at 12:50 on the next day.

Good to see some smart moves, and also, IB will upgrade MAD-GIG from 4x weekly to 5x weekly effective September 21st, and Daily on November 1st. Also, it's more one Sky Team partner at GIG, and more flights to Europe, so necessary nowadays to/from Rio.

With such developments GIG become the best served airport in Brazil to Spain with 13x weekly flights on the summer (7x IB, 3x PU, 2x UX, 1x BRA).

UX also flies 3x weekly to SSA in Brazil.

Felipe

Edit: Correct date is Nov/6.

Great news...
As I just said in other topic, GIG has plenty of potention yet right?
TAM could study GIG-MIA and GIG-CDG flights, even GIG-JFK (RG flyed this)...
But what I really think is that GIG has almost any flight within the Latin America, only for EZE and MVD... Why not GIG-CCS, GIG-BOG, GIG-VVI OR GIG-SCL flights??

You're right. But for Europe (where Brazilians do not need a visa) GIG needs more flights after the end of RG GIG-FRA.
It's also good as Air Europa has a good network and we can see more flights in the future. Any one knows UX future fleet plans ?

Good for UX! I wish them very good luck in this new route... I am sure they will succeed.

Any idea if they will be able to funnel passengers to Sao Paulo and other cities in Brazil through a local carrier?
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

This must reduce the scope for RG.

Air Europa is a typical low-yields airline thus the reason to land in GIG. Air Europa is not a full member of Sky Team, it only has a partnership with some Sky members - in fact, it is very hard to earn miles flying Air Europa...

I would rather see IB increasing GIG to daily instead...[but attentions are all to GRU nowadays].

If I am not mistaken, the moment they become an associate member of SkyTeam, passengers with frequent flyer accounts from other SkyTeam members will be able to accrue and redeem miles easily... if they are already an associate member, then this should be the case already.

Before their application to join, I believe they only had agreements with CO, AZ, AF and KL, and a limited codeshare/mileage agreement with AM for the AM MEX-MAD and UX MAD-CUN routes.

Sort of... Associates have to adopt one full member's FFP
-Copa uses CO onepass
-Kenya Airways used the former KLM flying Dutchman, which merged with AF Frequence Plus to create AF-KLM Flying Blue.
But still none of the 6 applicants has become part of the alliance.

That means, as you said above, FFs may only earn, spend, have elite benefits.... if their FF Program has signed an agreement with Air Europa.

-They had FFP agreement with KL Flying Dutchman and NW WorldPerks. It was a little weird as NW planes and UX planes did not use any common airport for a while. Had to be something related to KL-NW partnership.
-They started codesharing with AF (both AF->UX and UX->AF) in 2003 but no FFP agreement was signed. With the AF-KL FFP merger into Flying Blue, Air Europa Fidelitas members ceased to earn point on KLM and could only use points on AF & KLM flights. However, Flying Blue members can earn and spend miles on Air Europa flights.

-They did have an agreement with Alitalia but only for Spain-Italy and intra-Italy flights. This agreement expired last year. I think they don't codeshare anymore.

-They have an agreement with Continental allowing earn and spend points/miles on each other's flights as well as codesharing on CO MAD-EWR and UX MAD-BCN, MAD-PMI and MAD-AGP. In the begining UX had codeshares on CO flights ex-EWR to about 20 US destinations.

-They have an agreement with AM which is only block-codeshare on UX MAD-CUN flight.

And that's it regarding current Skyteam members. Regarding non-Skyteam members they have reciently signed a reciprocal FFP agreement with future-associate Portugalia. UX already were code-sharing on Portugalia's flights. And FFP's with Malev and Aeropostal (Venezuela) ended this year.

Now UX fidelitas is a really really poor Frequent Flyer Program. But as Air Europa knows they'll have to end the program in favour of Flying Blue, I just suppose they don't need to re-negociate agreements as they expire.

Without offer to take care of demand, all flights become high-yield. Air Europa has a good knowledge of SSA market where they expect to improve service this summer from 3x to 4x weekly flights. Even low-yield, it become a good profit and sometimes probably better than routes that has been recently dropped on high-yield markets because they can't generate profits year round.

Even TAM is looking for other markets nowadays. And this other market seems to be the "low-yield" GIG.

This mainly because RG has "closed its door in GIG" leaving a lot of frequencies to be filled by TAM and GOL. Otherwise, GRU expansion still are quicker than GIG, even for TAM and GOL.

As explained above, this is not the case. For example, UX has an agreement with KL but you only earn miles on very high fares (mainly full fare economy) when flying UX.

I have seen that already in the Amadeus and I am very much amused about it as it gives me another good option for a week trip to Rio ( Flamengo).  Smile

At the end of Nov it looks very good with all classes at 9.

Yeah....
