I was on one of these new planes last week, PTP
Compared to the 743s previously on this route, there is a huge improvement in terms of space (seating/storage), comfort (new business class seats etc) and overall quality of surroundings. Not surprising, since the 743s previously on this route were up to 25 years old and really showing their age, with total capacity of 507 passengers. The new 773s are in the usual DOM TOM set up, Affaires/Alizé/Tempo, but with around 480 passengers only (14 in Affaires, which is much better than before, where there were 21 seats, all quite cramped). I did not in fact see the Y cabin, but I noticed from another post on this subject that the seating is 3-4-3. I am sure that in Y there is also a massive improvement over the old 743s, especially in terms of seat comfort and entertainment.
If you compare to the “regular” 773s in the AF
fleet, then things change. On the normal routes, the layout is Première/Affaires/Tempo, which means that there is a first class cabin (8 seats) with full bed etc., which is really excellent. As regards Affaires and Tempo, the seats are identical as far as I am aware.
Even though for years I was hoping the AF
would finally retire their 4 old 743s from the Caribbean routes, I have to admit that I miss them (but not enough to want them to come back !), somehow a 777 just doesn’t have the same “excitement” factor, at least for me. I will be sorry when the 747 disappears from the AF
I hope that my reactions etc are useful, let me know if there is anything more you would like to know.
