Brazil Authority Fines Airlines - "fares Too Low"

Thu Aug 03, 2006 2:53 am

According to the Brazilian newspaper O Globo, 6 foreign airlines that operate in GRU were fined for "excessively lowering their fares" in light of RG's troubled situation. The authorities didn't specify which carriers were fined but confirmed that a number of airlines were under investigation, namely Air Canada, Air France, United, TAP, South African, Alitalia, Delta, LAN, Copa, American and Aerosur. The authorities said they will conduct a similar investigation on airlines operating at GIG.

RG dug its own hole... the authorities are just trying to look like they're helping because this is an election year. I don't know if RG will be in Star Alliance for long - UA, AC and LH no longer honour RG tickets for pax stranded abroad, and when I talked to UA customer service, they told me RG is no longer a part of IATA and the partnership between RG and UA has formally ended.

This however is further evidence of the fact that the "free market" for aviation in Brazil is naught but a fallacy... the federal authorities still have the power to veto fleet expansions, codeshares, ticket prices and routes. Brazil has improved in many ways since the end of the military regime but civil aviation seems to be stuck in 1964...

And last night, Tuesday, Gol had a special online offer after 10pm. Not sure if it's continuing but if you buy a ticket one way to certain domestic cities, the return is just R$1,00 or about U$.50! I tried GRU-AJU but the offer didn't extend to AJU but did to Maceio and Salvador. Rats!

ANAC issued a press release informing that it did not fine any foreign airline and that the dumping investigation process is not over yet.

Honestly, I would like to know what ANAC people is smoking because the international air fares sky rocketed since the collapse of Varig and ANAC is talking about dumping?!?!?!?!?

Jrosa is absolutely correct. Prices have been going up a lot and the one who currently offers the lowest price is the $481 web special with Varig!!!
Somebody at ANAC definately must be having smoking something!!!
