Airplane Registrations

I have a few questions about commercial airplane registrations (in particular, Canadian registrations, but information about the registration rules of other countries is fine).

1. When an airplane is sold to another airline based in another country (not leased), and the airplane is sold back to the original airline years later, can the old registration be used?

2. Can airplane registrations be transferred from one airplane to another?

3. Can a registration of a retired/scrapped airplane be used again on a new airplane?

4. When an airplane is sold to an airline based in another country, when does the change of registration take place? Before the plane is flown to it's new operator's home country, or after? What steps must be taken to register an airplane in another country?

You are probably thinking of a wet-lease. In that case, most registrations don't change at all, the temp. operator will carry it's original reg. If you are not, I have never heard of an airline selling an airplane and then re-acquiring the exact aircraft later in time. Most airlines sell their aircraft to update their fleets or phase out a certain aircraft type.

If an aircraft is technically de-registered, you can acquire the registration for your aircraft regardless of the type of aircraft it once represented (I'm not sure about heli vs. plane regs though).

Same concept, if it's open and not reserved, then it is fair for use on another aircraft. Example:

This is normally done before it leaves the country but after it is legally sold. Sometimes it will carry the old reg. but legally is registered under a new registration in it's home country. I would say just providing the aircraft's information and proof of ownership. Like a car but much more expensive and I'm sure it doesn't cost $60 to top it off.

Somewhat true... It all depends on what country the plane is going to. I've done several exports and every country is different. Some allow it to arrive with its old reg... some mandate that the reg be changed before departure. At NO TIME will you see an aircraft flying with the old reg applied, but now legally reg'd in the new country. The FAA-Bank and Lawers involved in the transfer are very serious about the change and will within minutes of the change have the new reg applied.

Yes...United had their viscounts from Capital N74--.
Then in the mid 60',their 727-100QC's were N74--

Continental changed many of their N numbers as they acquired planes from other airlines. I was told by an FAA man it cost $10(ten) bucks to change a number.

I apologize for not being more specific. It is perfectly legal (while the registration changes) to fly an aircraft with another tail number while being operated by the new owner. I think what I meant to say was that it is perfectly legal for the new owner to operate the aircraft under it's own standards and routes while the swap in in process.

I know of a biz-jet that was acquired by and company and the reg. on the aircraft (which was applied when it was sold to the aircraft broker) was short by one letter (to flow with their fleet's regs) and when they had the aircraft painted in it's livery the last letter was applied and tape was placed over it. It flew like this for 3 months while the change was in process. I think paperwork, sale, etc. took most of the time however, I am not an aircraft broker so I am not familiar with the acquisition process.
