Excellent Opportunity For New Carrier At JFK

Mon Aug 07, 2006 11:02 pm

Now that United is dropping their JFK-NRT and JFK-LHR service, it seems that they will have 6 gates at JFK for their LAX/SFO service and IAD RJs...This could easily be consolidated into 2 or 3 gates...This could create a great oppotunity for a new carrier to start service at JFK with up to three dedicated gates in Terminal 7 (and more at non-peak times)...Terminal 7 would also be ideal for any LCC that wanted to start JFK service such as AirTran or Virgin America. T7 is perhaps the most compact yet elegant terminal at JFK...It would be an easy operation for an LCC.

Do you think United will get rid of these gates, or will they perhaps be modified and run by BA?

Is JFK plagued by afternoon delays due to all of outbound INTL traffic? The last time I flew through JFK we waited to take off for almost an hour. It ranks right ahead of MEM as my least favorite airport.

This can happen during the afternoon rush or when the weather gets nasty. Normally it's not that bad, compared to EWR.

AirTran I don't see. Why would they want to deal with JFK when they already have service to LGA and EWR? If they really wanted to get some Long Island traffic they could go to ISP. The same can be said for most other LCCs.

I could see Virgin America, but I imagine that BA would not be enthralled by the thought of sharing their terminal space with anyone associated with Virgin.

THe majority of the united gates are for narrow body a/c. From what I understand British Airways charges a lot for rent. That is why there has been no new airline added except for IB. Also the facilities, baggage room and check in space is already at capacity so that may hamper any additional move in's.
The only valid opinions are those based in facts

Why not? Competition keeps America strong, and is good for customers. Plus JFK is not yet at the point of busting at the seams so there is room for growth.

They don't have to start JFK-ATL service, but there are markets from JFK that they could operate to.

That is very true...
