Thai Steps Up A350 And 787 Evaluations

Tue Aug 08, 2006 1:08 am

...Speaking to Flight International at Bangkok's soon-to-be-opened Suvarnabhumi airport, president Apinan Sumanaseni said: "We are studying the [A350] compared with the 787-9," adding that they are "serious" studies.

He said, however, that the carrier is in no rush to make a decision on either type and no formal request for proposals has been sent to either manufacturer. Separately, he said the airline is not concerned about delays to the Airbus A380 programme...

So they're doing what everyone else is doing. 787 vs the A350 with no word on dates and numbers.

So they're doing what everyone else is doing.

Indeed, seems FI has difficulties filling their magazine with NEWS, so they make some them selves by calling up the communication departments of airlines with long haul fleets to ask them for quotes on the A350 and/or 787: with the tension surrounding these 2 models , any quote always makes a nice head line.

Who's next on their phone list to confirm they have looked at the Airbus and Boeing brochures... and make an article out of it?

Perhaps, however, the reporter claims to have "interviewed" Mr. Sumanaseni, the President of TG.

Then correct the above:

Quoting Sabenapilot (Reply 2):

to:

they go after any CEO of an airline with long haul fleets to ask him for quotes on the A350 and/or 787.

There is a significant difference between being given an interview by the CEO where he himself announces future fleet plans, or bump into him and ask about any such plans yourself... FI is once again filling their pages, that's all.

Maybe FI should start calling the Comm's departments of airlines with existing 787 orders and ask them about the "rumours" that they are considering changing to the A350.

The airlines denying this could make an even better headline for FI. Read "{Air New Zealand/Qantas/enter airline} denies rumours of 787 cancellation after a thorough A350 evaluation."

In the Thai Contest , this is probably a 50-50.
Very hard competititon .
Perhaps a little bit advantage for Boeing , as if they go Airbus , they will not order Boeings for a while , and in this case they will have an all Airbus fleet.
Not sure , it's what they want.
Yes after receiving the last batch of 777-200ERs they have in order , i do not see them ordering more 747-400s , and they will have received all their Boeing planes. The only way to stay a Boeing customer , is to order 747-8Is.
Can TG afford to have a mixed fleet of A380s and 747-8Is ?
I guess the choice of A350/787 battle is linked to the future plane they wish to get to replace their 747-400s , and if they wish or not to have an all Airbus fleet.

I'm pretty sure that TG's 747-400s will probably stay in the fleet for about a while longer as they've just upgraded their business/ first class cabins on 12 of their 744s. However, I've heard recently that THAI is looking to replace their AB6's which is growing quite old (15 years on average with the first being 21 years old and the last 6 being 8 years old) I can see them ordering 787-3 because they operate AB6 on short haul/ domestic routes mostly.

However, THAI also have a policy of having mixed boeing/airbus orders to "please" -- as one of the papers said it - both manufacterers/ superpowers (europe vs. america). Like last time they've ordered B777-200ER alongside with their A380/ A340 order. Then there were a 777 order with a 330 order before that.
