Former Airlines That Based Crews In Chicago?

Tue Aug 08, 2006 5:50 am

Hi Everybody,

I have done quite a bit of research and cannot seem to find out which airlines used Chicago as a crew base since (The start of commerical aviation I guess) and the dates that the bases were active.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks,

I know Ozark had a crew base there in the 60's and 70's. ORD was the second largest station on the network after STL and ahead of PIA. Not sure when it closed, but at one point Ozark was pushing 50 flights a day out of one gate. How's THAT for good gate utilization!

CO had a base in ORD, but I'm not sure of when it closed.

FWIW, we also had bases in HNL, LAX, SEA, ELP, DEN, MCI, IAD, DAL (TI/Frontier).

North Central/Republic had pilots and fa's from the mid '50's until about the time of the NWA merger,TWA had a pilot and fa base also.

Interesting, does anyone know about Delta?

Also, If anyone can dig up exact dates that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

You are only 1/2 correct. While the post-merger Pilot base may have closed shortly after the merger, the Flight Attendant base remained open until late 2001.

Delta also had a Flight Attendant base in Chicago which closed in 2002.

As far as the specific dates, I can not be sure, although I do know that NWA's presence in Chicago as a base had been a very long one, and Delta's since their merger with Chicago & Southern. Eastern also had a Chicago base.

Don't forget the current airlines w/bases there:

American
American Eagle
American Trans Air (MDW)
Shuttle America
Southwest (MDW)
United
USA 3000 (ORD)

If I have left any out of this list, or, any of this information has been posted prior to my posting, do not take offense.

I believe the NWA FA base in ORD was to support the NRT trip.

TWA had a crew base in Chicago up until the mid to late 1990's, IIRC.

You are correct, however the flying in ORD (and sometimes MDW) also included trips throughout the United States. The base was not immediately closed after the cessation of ORD/NRT passenger service.

And lets not forget that NW served around 16 domestic cities before the merger with almost 65 daily flights out of ORD (over 70 if you include MDW), so at that time (around 1985), the base had to be in place for more than just the NRT route. They also served Seoul non-stop, by the way.

Anyone agree with me?

Seoul
Tokyo
Seattle
Billings
Rochester, MN
Minneapolis
Madison
Milwaukee
Detroit
Columbus
Boston
New York
Washington D.C.
New Orleans
Tampa
Miami
Fort Lauderdale
Fort Myers

This is all acording to a 1985 timetable I have.

I'm quite sure these flights were supported through crews from MSP,Republic on the other side did have a large presence at ORD and their crews in ORD supported the operation,I know for sure NWA had no PILOT base in ORD

I'd be curious if Trans States, Chautauqua and Mesa have crew bases in ORD in addition to Skywest which was mentioned. United Express is huge.

Also what about Air Wisconsin and Atlantic Coast Airlines? I would assume Air Wisconsin used to have a base there, but probably doesn't anymore.

Air Wisconsin did have a base at ORD until the move to U.S. Airways. My old neighbor was a Flight Attendant and had to move out East when the UA Express contract ended.

Also, I am pretty sure that NW had a regular crew base at ORD before the RC merger. It was their second largest "hub" behind MSP. So why wouldn't they? Actually, I remember reading that somewhere in an old newspaper.

Any more clarification???

Eastern1985...like I posted earlier, flight attendants yes, pilots no way. NW's pre merger pilot bases were MSP and SEA,they may have had BOS and LAX pilots but no pilots in ORD.BTW thanks for the OAG's,I hate to think of the ones we had in our house from the 70's that were thrown out in a move!

Charlienorth,

You are correct, I just skimmed through the Chicago tribune back issues and found two references to NW Chicago based FA's.

The first was in 2001 when the company announced the closure of their ORD crew base and the second was in 1985 from the "Announcement" section where a newly married couple was featured and the article said that she was a Northwest Orient FA based in Chicago for the previous 6 years.

Here's one most probably didn't know about... ValuJet.

We had a crew base at Chicago in 1995 and 1996. It was very small...50 flight attendants and 40 pilots at the most.

DL had a full crew base in ORD at one point, as did EA, NW, TW, NC, OZ (as well as AA and UA, which still do). ORD used to be the midwest terminus of CO's route system, so their ORD crew base certainly made sense, they once flew 747's to LAX and DEN from ORD, those were the days. When you think of the current parade of crummy UA airbuses and AA MD80's, it makes you want to cry!

Yeah ORD was a base for alot of people. It has wreaked havoc on my commute whenever I use ATL to connect somewhere, but on ORD-MSY I can bump just about any NRSA I want to, because Shuttle America flies to ORD, and I work for them. Thats why I use MSY. If there is a seat left, I usually get it, and I have gotten the last one on many occasions. I am based in ORD as well.

Any NW employees here that may know the number of FA's based at ORD in the 70's, 80's, and 90's?
