KLM AMS Nonrev Procedures

Wed Aug 09, 2006 2:05 am

Hello

I was wondering what the Nonrev procedures are for checking in for a KLM flight in AMS. I will be arriving on DL flight 38 and then connecting on KLM flight 597. Where should I go? What can I expect and how should I present myself? Details would be appreciated. Thanks!

Where should I go?

DL38 will arrive at the G-concourse.

If you check-in your bags all the way to CPT, proceed to transferdesk 6 to check-in for the KL597. If transferdesk 6 is overcrowed (usually) you can also proceed to transferdesk 4, next to gate D41.

If your bags are checked in to AMS only, go to baggage claim to collect it and then proceed to the overcrowed, unorganized and horrible KLM check-in hall, which will be departure hall 2.

You will get a stand-by boardingpass, also if the flight has many open seats. Once you have your boarding pass, proceed to the gate and give your boarding pass to the gate agent. The gate agent will be at the gate appr. 75 minutes before departure. After you gave your boarding pass, take seat and the gate agent will call your name about 15 minutes before departure and tell you if you are on the flight or if you have to spend a night in AMS (there are worse things in life!  biggrin  )

Do NOT ask for an upgrade, most of the KLM gate agents don't like that! Be aware that KL has a dresscode, JEANS = NO SEAT. (but don't overdress either!)

On board you can expect the usual KL service, which is definately not bad, but also nothing special. KL597 is a B777 with PTV/AVOD. Seating is very cramped. Crew is usually OK. The cabin crew will appreciate it when you introduce yourself upon boarding, telling them that you are DL staff, but once again be aware that they don't like it if you ask for an upgrade! Introduce yourself to the purser (4 stripes on the uniform) or assistent purser (3 stripes)

Please let me know, what your travel dates are, I can look up if you have a fair chance to get on! (597 is ususally very full)

Anyway, good luck and happy landings!

Actually if you're NOT checked though just go to the check in machines in AMS. If the flight's not too full the machine WILL give you a seat right away if your properly listed for the flight. after that just proceed to bag drop-off and passport control.
However if your on a non-rev through ticket I'm sure they'll be able to check you through. If DL gives you a stand-by boarding pass for the second flight just proceed to the gate, if not proceed to a transfer desk (the one at the beginning of the E-concourse is best) and pick up your boarding pass. Seat will be assigned at gate..

Sorry but that's just complete nonsense. Seats and class are assigned solely based on seat availability and your non-rev priority, wich is based on your company's agreement with KL and your seniority.

Not allways true, I got a seat AMS-ZRH a week ago, 15 open seats, KLM Staff passes.

Not complete nonsense, be advised that groundstaff can and WILL deny you if your not dressed properly. Furthermore, asking for an upgrade is prohibited by KLM non-rev rules and CAN result in denied boarding or offloading.

Rest assured, I will come dressed as business casual and will not solicit an upgrade. I am very concious on my flight privilege and not abuse it.

Checking in with the kiosk sounds great, but I will traveling on an ID96 and not sure if that will work or not.

Any ideas of where to go or what to do in AMS if I get denied boarding because of availability? Are there cozy corners to retire to?

I have flown KL many times non-rev and I have yet to see anyone upgraded, regardless of company agreement. Northwest has the best possible agreement with KL and to my knowledge, no one at NW has ever been upgraded.

JRadier is right. KLM can deny you boarding if you are not dressed appropriately. I myself denied non-revvers access to a flight because of dressing improperly many times.

As for upgrades... Codeco gives the gate agent onload recommendations based on PSN/Seniority and travel classes M/C vs. C/M. That being said getting an upgrade can just be based on luck. I got upgraded countless times ex-AMS, without asking for it and with M-class still having open seats.

So that means that the Agents in AMS have violated at least 7 times this rule when I was travelling.

Sorry but thats not true!!!!!!!!

Yes it is true!
How many more KLM-employees do you need to tell you it is true???

It's a written rule that you can't wear jeans when non-revving with KLM.

If you got on with jeans it's probably because they were too busy to notice,
or didn't feel like making a fuss about it. But if they would deny you, it would be their right to do so!!!

Then you were lucky. Very simple. Or like KLMCedric said... they probably were not in the mood to make a big deal out of it. You don't need to overdress, but jeans are not allowed per KLM rules.

-Sorry KLM, but I don't get that one. Apparently, the chances of getting in to J are pretty limited if not null, so why can't you wear what most Y PAX (and J class customers too) wear anyway?

-I know, i know, non-rev's a privilege, but it's also a form of compensation. Airline jobs typically pay less than similar positions in other industries.

-Funny that DL and KL, two companies which don't have a reputation for customer service excellence are actually some of the most conservative airlines in terms of non-rev dress code!

Happy Flying!

Well..... then why make the airline look even worse? It definitely wouldn't hurt the airline if you represented it well.

You are representing the airline when dressed nicely. When you walk on the plane as a passenger, and see people in Y wearing a very nice outfit, you get the feeling that you are on a nicer airline. Not like Southwest where everyone wears jeans, and EVERYONE knows whats going on with Southwest.

Never EVER wear jeans while non-revving! It's not appropriate! Even when listed for Y on Delta, when I know that I am going to get Y and even when I am listed on flights that don't even have a first class cabin I ALWAYS where the proper attire as if I were listed for F... Even on DL where you don't HAVE to not wear jeans I still think that it is totally unacceptable..
The proper term is "on final" not "on finals" bud...

Just a question: are you denied for all types of jeans, or will a black pair of jeans work? I would understand that you get denied in a worn lightblue pair of jeans, but not when you're wearing a pair of new black ones.

Maybe I was really lucky, but funny that nobody ever told me that. Furthermore when I asked once ( at an outstation) they told me it doesn´t matter.

In end of June I went to AMS with some friends. I on ZED they as normal pax.
As we all know summer in EU was quite hot until now and I was wearing shorts.
When I checked in... no word... ( I have to admit that I wanted to change them into trousers). So when I reached the gate I was called out and a very nice young KLM Staff said:

Sir, would you mind to change your shorts into trousers so that we can upgrade you into J-Class as the Eco is full.
Don´t worry you will receive the full service.

I looked at her and said that I would rather keep me shorts as is so hot and I am sure one of the other pax will be more happy to expierience J-Class.

Her answer was: oh, I forgot that there are intelligent staff pax on this world.

She was really really nice and I travlled in Eco next to my stoned friends ( which was super fun)..... but next time I will think about he shorts.

This was a really lucky day for me...so to say... since I have her phone number as well for the next time we go to AMS....... Big grin  Big grin

Cedric..... I believe you guys now  Smile

Edit: On my airline this all would be absolute impossible what I am doing  Big grin

Edit 2: It was a shorthaul flight

One more thing,

List yourself properly at least 48 hours in advance.

Enjoy the flight !

KL gives Y-class to all other carriers regardless of class mentioned in your ticket. Some exceptions are made for higher management on Duty or retired Kl-staff living in the States and traveling on tickets emitted by NW.

And a final word on the jeans: NO jeans! If they're not too bad I'll ask the cabin crew if they're all right with it but definitely Y-class only.
I wish that all skies were orange and blue!!

Ia Orana from Tahiti everyone !

Can anyone tell me if they can list me for KLM flights as I am based in Tahiti and live here and I'm planning a little nonrev round-the-world trip flying on Skyteam carriers !
If anyone can do that they can send me a message and I'll give them all the details.
I want to travel on the 17th of sept on CDG-AMS-EWR or JFK.
Which is better ? KLM 777 or A330 ?

Thanks for your help guys,

Happy Flying,

AF Cabin Crew

As per KLM regulations only blue jeans are banned. Nevertheless, I have flown non-rev many times in decently looking blue jeans and no one told me a word about it. What could be wrong with jeans if half of the aircraft if wearing them?
