Finally they go to MickeyLand from BOS. I think they will do very well on this even though it is going to be a dogfight between themselves, B6, DL and I believe HP runs some Florida routes out of BOS as well.

Should be interesting to see how customers react to FL as compared to B6 and DL inthe Boston market. FL XM vs. B6 Live! FL must be either fairly confident in the loads using the 737's - or they don't have enough 717's to go around, I would go for the later.

Good luck FL, drive my stock up!!!

My guess is alot of BOS passengers already fly to Florida on FL, these flights will just free up connecting seats in ATL or BWI.

I think that they will do very well, except for the fact they are hindered by the crappy terminal space they have at BOS. It needs a total makeover big time.

It does need a makeover, but it is WICKED convenient. If you check in on line, you basically get dropped off right at security, (and if you don't c/i on line, security is only steps away from the tkt counter and kiosks) and it's only AirTran passengers utilizing it.

So you don't get to look at pretty, overpriced terminals, who cares? You can show up 30 minutes from departure, and be 30 feet from your airplane with minimal security... people like it, and it's cheap for all involved... Kudos to the company for putting convenience over asthetics....

Are there more gates for expansion in this area? Sounds like a great set up.

Unfortunately no - that's the hinderance. C11 is used as needed, but although it's convenient to the ramp personnel (only 20 yards from the other gates), it's a haul from these gates for the passengers, and a trip out and back thru security. Luckily TSA assists in redirecting passengers who attempt to enter the usual AirTran gates, but are scheduled out of C11...

IIRC, the primary reason why FL was late in the game with the BOS-Florida non-stop market is because they didn't have any longer-range planes to spare. FL couldn't use their 717s due to its limited range. That disadvantage (which is now eroding as FL receives more 73Gs) allowed B6 to capitalize on that market before FL.

Well, the BOS-Florida market just got very interesting......with AirTran going head to head against JetBlue (which has had remarkable success out of BOS) and the long established legacy carrier Delta (which did try its Song experiment out of BOS)....this is certainly one to watch: JetBlue coming into a market to shake things up is one thing, now we have AirTran coming in to put pressure on JetBlue. Its certainly a bold move - I think that JetBlue has more at risk, but that remains to be seen.

Many here at a.net have expected AirTran to enter the BOS-Florida market just as soon as more 73Gs were delivered (which now seems to be the case)...but I always thought that AirTran would pass on BOS-FLorida and find more lucrative opportunities opening MidWest-Florida routes (where there is less competition).....clearly, I was wrong. AirTran quietly opened service at HPN (where, per rumors, they are doing very well) and now BOS is getting additional service......does AirTran have more plans for the northeast US?

Actually, we (ValuJet) used to serve numerous markets from BOS, not currently served by AirTran, using DC9s including:

RDU
IAD
TPA
PBI
FLL
MCO

Do DC9s have more range than 717s? I thought BOS-Florida was held off because the 717 didn't have the legs. Maybe they used the md80s for these runs?

I would think that the 717 would have more range, providing that they are newer and more fuel efficient than the 40+-year-old DC9...

Granted, BOS-MCO isn't that much further than PIT-MCO, and I have flown on DC9 equipment from PIT-MCO when US operated them. Even still, the 717 IIRC does have more range, like up to 1,500 miles if I am not mistaken, while the DC9 had between 1,000 and 1,200 miles range...

No, they were not MD80s. (The 4 MD80s we had on line only operated out of ATL....) We did, from time to time get DC9-20s on these runs though, which did have more range than the DC9-30s - and if you were full and had a head wind, you occasionally had to make a fuel stop at JAX..ugh.

As for the legs of the 717s, keep in mind they also operate ATL-DEN and MSP-MCO.

As a f/a for Airtran I'm very happy to hear this. I think we will do very well with this service. When I fly from BOS (just today in fact) alot of customers ask if we are ever going to start direct service to Florida. This news should make them very happy.

My stock too! bigthumbsup  And, that will help us and ATL immensly. Micky Mouse flights are almost always packed. Amazing how many kids are jetting off to Micky with their parental units even during the school year! And, when MCO pax misconnect, it can be heartbreaking when the kids realize their day is going to be at "BIWI" instead of hob knobbing with the uber Mouse and crew! hissyfit

I find this move very interesting on the part of FL. Could it be that they are becoming more bold on expansion moves due the lack of cities where they can avoid competition on the East Coast?

In the past it has always seemed that they tended to avoid direct competition with WN & B6 for the most part. Still to this day they really don't overlap with WN at MDW & BWI and they backed out of the BOS-DCA(or was it IAD?) route giving it B6.

Honestly, I was expecting the next round of expansion to come from MDW, BWI & DTW (which did get some).

Hope they can expand this to a permanent route with the 737's soon. I have to admit I really like FL 737's with the XM and have been flying them more and more (mostly into MDW) due to the DL CRJ's ever since DL backed out the MD-80's and 738's out of MDW.

What's the next move for FL you think - MCI, DFW, STL hopefully, LAS, LAX, etc.?
