Tough Penalties For Air-rage In Belgium

Wed 09/08/06 - Airline passengers who don't behave themselves will face hefty fines or even prison sentences, once a new royal decree becomes law. SN Brussels Airlines reported some 60 incidents of air-rage in 2005.
Most incidents of air-rage involve verbal aggression towards other passengers or airline staff.

However, in a growing number of cases, elementary safety rules are being broken by badly behaved passengers.

Geert Sciot of SN Brussels Airlines told the VRT that there has been a global increase in the number air-rage incidents involving violence.

He added that this is not only linked to the growth in passenger numbers, but is also due to factors prevalent in society at large.

Anyone caught smoking or using a mobile phone, while on board an aircraft, will be fined up to 1,000 euros.

Anyone found to be drunk and disorderly or using violence on board a flight will risk a gaol sentence of between 8 days and 1 year.

Good. Air rage has gone way too far; hopefully this will make people realize that there are certain standards for conduct aboard an aircraft (heck, there are certain standards for conduct in public).

Good thing.

Things aren't always that easy for SN staff on some African lines. People tend to think they are like in a restaurant.

Indeed I hope they will use this law asap and definitely now with the new wave of attacks on planes...you have to behave yourself!

And airliners should organise themselves to ban people not only on one airline but cross airline.
