Delta Jet Gets Stuck In Mississippi Mud.

Fri Aug 11, 2006 6:05 pm

JACKSON, Miss. Thursday, August 10, 2006 --- A jetliner strayed off the runway Thursday night at an airport and got stuck in the mud, stranding more than 200 passengers for hours, authorities said.

The Delta Airlines jet, bound for Atlanta from San Francisco, was diverted to Jackson because of bad weather in the Atlanta area, an airport official said.

After refueling, pilots edged off the runway at Jackson-Evers International Airport and the plane became stuck.

Dirk Vanderleest, airport chief executive officer, said none of the 223 passengers were injured.

He said Delta was sending another passenger jet to pick up those stranded in Jackson. The second plane was due around midnight.

The jet stuck in the mud won't be moved until daylight.

"It's going to be sometime tomorrow because it's stuck in there pretty good," Vanderleest said.

I think Joe Patroni would have had it out by now.  Silly

Well, JAN doesn't really receive 767 flights all too often, so it is an unfamiliar airport for the pilots  Wink .

Yeah, I doubt JAN has airport charts or any markings on a taxiway or ramp that look like ATL or SFO's!

But they do get 757's, which these pilots also fly.

Since Delta mainline serves JAN all Delta pilots have the charts for it. Taxiway and ramp markings are standardized. You don't have to be familiar with an airport to get around it if you know the system, which every pilot does.

JAC gets 757s from Delta. JAN used to see many daily 757 flights, but that was many years ago. The largest plane JAN currently gets is the MD-88.

I believe 757's were in there as recently as earlier this year, but I could be wrong. In any event, still no reason to cut short the turn and run the mains off the taxiway.

actually, the largest plane JAN gets are the reserve C-17s based there. The airport is plenty big enough to handle large aircraft.

As well as the even larger C-141 Starlifters that were based there for years with the MSANG before the current C-17 replaced them. Concorde has been to JAN as well.

I live in the Jackson area and had an IFR training flight on Friday evening (day after the airplane got stuck), during which we passed right over JAN midfield (we were on radar vectors for VOR-B to Madison - a GA airport a few miles to the north). Anyway, my instructor mentioned what had happened, so I looked down and saw it was still there, although it had already been towed to the ramp.

I found the video that was on the evening news - http://www.wapt.com/video/9664637/detail.html
At one point you can see the fleet number 1403, which corresponds to N143DA. If the route SFO-ATL is correct, I'd say this was DL 670.

Incidently, I must also comment that, as someone already mentioned, the facility is equipped to handle large aircraft due to the ANG base - in fact, due to the relatively light traffic, FedEx periodically sends its DC-10s and MD-11s here for training.

Just came across our old Concorde video - we got a video of it on final approach from the mall here in town, then at the airport after it had parked (though that portion of the tape seems to have been damaged). I'm told I was there, but I was only 3 years old.

Anyway, it arrived on June 26, 1988, around 13:30, and it was British Airways' G-BOAC.
