surprised it took DL this long to add this route since FL has been running it for a while now.  Yeah sure

new 2X daily CRJ service to begin 11/15.

Air Tran is an obvious factor in this, but then again, PHF has developed pretty good for Delta in general. Still, I don't give this route much of a future.

Where is the "supposed" expansion that Delta was supposed to do Monday and/or today?

Just out of curiousity, when did Piedmont d/b/a US Airways Express stop flying Newport News-Norfolk? I remember taking that six-minute flight back in 2003 following a VDB on PHF-CLT, and connecting from Norfolk to LaGuardia.

Why didn't they just start RIC-BOS instead????

Because Airtran flies PHF-BOS and DL loves to throw RJ's at Airtran routes.

seems to work. You only have to take a portion of Airtrans passengers to cause them to lose money on the route.

You can bet your last dollar that when AirTran pulls down their newly-inaugurated BOS-Florida routes, Delta won't be flying BOS-Newport News anymore.

Same with ACY-MCO if Spirit withdraws from ATL-Florida.

Well, Jetblue flies RIC-JFK and DL loves to throw RJ's at B6 routes as well. Why not RIC-BOS?

Umm, can you name some examples? Last I know, DL mostly "threw mainline planes" at B6 routes, not RJs. At least I don't see any CRJs on JFK-DEN or JFK-SEA.

If the fares match FL, the CRJ loses considerably. The CRJ economics prevent its profitability at LCC fares.

Very true, B6 forced DL to create an airline- Song.

On July 5, Delta started 3x daily, non-stop flights from RIC-JFK with CRJ's. The route was originally supposed to be started with Dash 8's but the public raved about how they would be murdered on the route with Jetblue flying the same route with jets, tvs, etc... I believe the same goes for some of the other routes Delta started out of JFK these past few months.

In Delta's defense:

JFK-BOS and JFK-RDU were served long before jetBlue was even born.

Oh, of course, I completely forgot, Delta never adds routes to feed their international traffic, it's always only just to p*ss off B6, right? And never mind the fact that most of these routes used to be served even before B6 was a wet dream of Neeleman, and were discontinued by a man who had no idea how to run an airline.

Feeding international traffic is one of the reasons DL started these routes but another was to try to weaken/annoy Jetblue. If it wasn't they wouldn't advertise low fares to compete with Jetblue on those routes. I know I saw alot of those banner ads her on a.net when service first started and I do see them from time to time now.

Interesting logic. Last I read Delta was offering low introductory fares on ATL-DKR-JNB. Didn't know that JetBlue was flying that route as well.

No Jetblue doesn't serve that route and ATL-JNB is not a route that is designed to feed traffic. Delta is offering low introductory fares between ATL-JNB because they want people to travel ATL-JNB on DL. If PWM-JFKs sole purpose was to allow pax to connect international cities, why bother to advetise flights for Jetblue's $59 fare when most of your seats are going to be occupied by Int'l connections.

Simply not true. RJs can and do operate profitably in many markets that have Low fares. They succeed because DL has a good revenue management department. Even in low fare markets, there are fares worth several hundred dollars. Profitability comes by taking fewer of the deepest discount fares and more of the upper end fares. With only 50 seats to fill, it's alot easier to take just a handul of the cheap seats and top off with a higher percentage of three digit fares.

DL already flies BOS-ORF. By adding BOS-PHF they are putting pressure on FL by having twice as many flights in essentially the same market. Not sure how successful it will be but FL has been adding flights in several markets and probably in DL's mind is partly to blame for this pissing contest between FL and NK because FL decided to go into Detroit. I'm a little surprised we haven't seen any route changes from NW because of this little FL-NK spat.

True. While it may not be DL's *complete* intention to compete with B6, they have thrown RJ's on a lot of B6's routes.

Some of the flights are for feeder traffic to the international bank at JFK; the rest are for mostly O&D traffic. For example, ROC-JFK operates 4x on DL (6x on B6), but only 2 of the flights match the international bank. I highly doubt the other 2 flights are for domestic connections while CVG and ATL are both well-served from ROC.

As for the topic at hand, this doesn't surprise me in the least. As someone said before, this is probably just retailiation for FL starting BOS-MCO/TPA/RSW, though I don't see AirTran as a major threat.

You may want to look at the domestic connections...I know recently upstate NY travelers are looking at Delta to get to the west coast via NYC since Jetblue gave them the idea...Delta now is able to expand on that....
