Seat Change On US Airways ~ WHY?

Sat Aug 12, 2006 2:47 am

All,

I booked my trip to FCO on Jan. 14th of this year, and was assigned seat #24A for the PHL-FCO and FCO-PHL legs on the A330. I'm travelling alone.

I checked my reservation the other day, and found that the seat had been changed on the PHL-FCO leg to #33H, which isn't as good because of where the seat's located at the back of the plane (fusealage narrows at that point). No other seat changes were made to the other three flights I'm booked on.

I called US to see if they could tell me why I was bumped out the of the seat I was given back in January, and they couldn't tell me, or share the exact reason. I was offered some other aisle or center seats, but no other windows.

Any ideas as to why US changed the seat on me like this? At least with UA, I can select my own seat, but I couldn't even do that when I made the reservation on US.

Thanks!

It is always the airline's perogative to change your seat assignment, even up to boarding time. My best advice to you would be to get to the airport as early as you can. If lucky, you may be able to gain an even better seat than previously assigned as airlines continuously hold seats up at check-in. Good luck!

Thanks! Getting there early won't be a problem...I leave SEA at 6:30am, and will be arriving there around 3:30am at this point, as I'm taking a shuttle van. Hopefully they can give me something better, and not an aisle or center seat.

Its completely impossible to reserve a seat on any US airline more than 30 days in advance, if I'm not mistaken.

You might be. I've reserved seats well in advance of 30 days. One issue here might be that the OP is not an elite member on US and therefore could be changed with less issues to the airline since sadly in today's airline environment those passengers are less of a concern.

I've reserved seats on NW around two months in advance and had no problem...they were not changed.

That makes sense to me. This is my first flight on US, so in their eyes, "I ain't squat" in terms of seating priority.

Thanks.

Guess it all depends on the airline, then. I always get to select my seats when flying on UA (my preferred airline) but US simply assigned me seats with no option to choose myself for SEA-PHL-FCO-PHL-SEA.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but since US is part of the Star Alliance alongside UAL, I am guessing your US flight may be code-shared with UAL. If there is a UAL flt# associated with your flight, you could perhaps call UAL directly and ask for a seat assignment, since it sounds like you have more "status" with UAL.
