UA 747s In New Livery

Sat Aug 12, 2006 6:21 am

Hi everyone!

I want to know how many UA 747s hae been painted in the new livery? How many 747's do they still operate and how long will it be before all of them are painted?

I know I've seen at least one (it was here in HNL a couple of months ago). It looks amazing and bares a slight resemblance to the CO livery!  stirthepot

I am as well interested in the new livery thing.
How long do you think will it take to paint the whole fleet?

I checked "United Airlines" in the photo search engine. Am I right that most of the newly painted planes are widebody jets?

I prefer the new livery to the old one. Although the old one was somehow elegant and quite special (like the RJ or old US liveries, no EuroWhite), but the new one looks better because it is brighter. Especially the new tail is much nicer than the old one (I have never understood why the United "U" was not in the centre of the tail...)

A good number of the 777s and several 767s and 747s are painted. I believe as far as percentage of fleet painted, widebody's far outnumber narrowbodies, although several 737-500s and A319s were just painted. There's also the 50 or so Ted A320s, which are by default in the new livery.

I think when UA redesgined they said that they were not going to "rush" to paint the fleet but rather where going to follow the standard schedule for painting... they didn't specify how long that was going to take.
Why do I fly???

Actually, I noted while at NRT in June that a good number of 777s hadn't yet been painted. The one I flew from NRT-ICN was filthy on the outside; smoke wafts were visible around most of the pax doors and several panels were somewhat discolored! I'm hoping that one has since been converted over. I think the new livery looks great. The 744 that swung through HNL looked beautiful.

I don't think so. spotting at O'Hare, i'd say every 9 out of 10 UA RJ's are in the new livery. I think most United Express are in the new livery.

Does anyone know the exact number of aircraft in the new colors? And if so what are the Regs?

I wish UA flew mainline to MYR, that way you wouldn't be stuck in a smelly Saturn for 12 hours.

I usualy see at least one 737 in the new colors every day here at MSY pushing back for DEN or IAD. Gorgeous paint scheme, in my opinion the best of any major airline flying today.

Maybe the reason is that a a lot of RJ planes have been delivered within the last two years (E-Jets, CRJ-700)?

(So - this one is an exception...unfortunately I am too stupid to show the picture directly...)

So still nobody can give the detailed numbers of newly painted planes?

A good number of 733 and 735 are in the new livery. Just saw a lot on recent trips to the north. Almost all express if not all are in the new livery. When I was spotting in SAN, I did see a couple 735 Shuttle a/c that were not in the livery.

Interesting question. I have been wondering this very question myself as UAL is my favorite major airline.

Great specific information. thanks AirCop. N198UA was the bird that took me home about a year ago from EDDF to KSFO but she was in old color then. Just to think she's out there now flying the new colors loud and proud! Such a wonderful paint scheme.

that could be true...but to answer the question, I'm pretty sure more narrow-bodies are painted in the new livery as opposed to their heavies.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think the reason so many of the United Express jets are in the new livery is because so many of the regional airlines that make up United Express joined United after the livery change so they had to paint their existing planes to United's new colors immediately. Of course, all of the E-170's are new too and I think many of the CRJ-700s are too.

I believe the following regional airlines joined United Express after the livery change:

Colgan Air
GoJet Airlines
Republic Airlines
Chautauqua Airlines
Shuttle America

The airlines that existing before the livery change and were retained by United Airlines are:

Mesa Airlines
SkyWest Airlines
Trans States Airlines

this is true, but does it take the fact away that more of the RJ's are painted in the nw livery rather than heavies? I understand there are numerous reasons why the RJ's are already in the new c/s, but all I'm stressing is that they are indeed, and more so than their heavies.

I have not seen the new UA livery in person so maybe it looks better live. I don't care for the livery I have seen in pictures. Just two colors, blue and white. It reminds me of the Boeing livery which I also don't care much for.

Just my opinion of course!

Wow, really?

I think that the new livery is maybe the best that United has ever had...
It might be hard to keep clean, though...

The only suggestion that I would have is for them to add some pale red to the giant "tulip" on the tail, but I'm sure that going with another color would not be cost effective.

Still, I love the new livery; not crazy about how it's applied to the 747 fleet though, with the stripes running through the windows, rather than below them, like the rest of the fleet, but that has been discussed numerous times already. Apparently the colors change at the middle of the nosecone, with the dark blue center downwards, and the stripes center upwards. Still does not look quite right to me, however.

I do love the tail! It looks very nice!

However the fuselage could be better, it is kinda boring. I love the blue, but I don´t like the way the UNITED titles are written! But compared to most other american carriers UA looks fantastic. Generally I think that there are some differences in American and Europeam senses of style (another good example are the American cars...they look so different...)

UA's new livery is "alright." there was something special about their old, classy grey livery. that was one of a kind livery, and with their new prodominently white livery, UA's livery is nothing special. it blends in in the "sea of white" liveries.

That is correct, and I initially misread the original posters statement. He said that those were the carriers retained following the new livery, not just carriers operating at the time of the livery change.

However, ZW was still flying for UA at the time of the change, and I think DH was on its way out at the time.

Just to clarify my posts from above, I was only referring to mainline. UAL's paint schedule is far different than the regionals.

And yes, many more widebodies are still in the old livery than the new, but as far as percentage (new/total), more widebodies than narrowbodies are painted. I think there are 10 733s, about the same in 735s, the 13 752s for p.s., 5-6 A320s, and 3-4 A319s, and maybe 6-7 each 767, 777, 747. That's just a rough estimate though.

It seems there's been a few more 744s in the new colors at SFO the last few weeks. I was spotting for a few minutes yesterday at SFO, was about to leave when I saw the new colors on a 744 (Heathrow-bound I believe) taxiing toward the 28s. Decided to stay to watch it go, glad I did, it looked phenomenal.

Frequently there's one parked out by the hangar too.

I don't think you ever will. Does every star member have to paint one of aircraft type the star alliance livery?

I did a quick search in the photos and it appears as though United as a 767 and 772 painted.

Original Star Members:
Lufthansa has a 744, CRJ-700, 343, 346
Thai has a 744, 333
Air Canada has a 763, 343 (Maybe 2 343s)
SAS has a MD-81, MD-82, 333, 738
Varig has/had 763, MD-11

I'm hoping to fly on some new-livery 744s next month (SFO-HKG, HKG-SIN, NRT-LAX), or at least spot some in SFO, HKG or NRT. Also a 777 SIN-NRT but I think the 744 is more "special" in the new livery.
