Is MAN Viewing Park Operating Normally?

Sun Aug 13, 2006 4:54 am

With the current security situation at UK airports, is the viewing park at MAN operating normally?

I think so, I was on the opposite bank yesterday evening and it looked 'populated' as normal.

I was there for a couple of hours today, and everything seemed completely normal.

Manchester airport has never been concerned about Aircraft Spotters and enthusiasts because unlike some other UK airports (cough cough) it knows that they are an asset to an airport when looking out for unusual things in the area.

Nah, they won't close it. I don't think they ever have when there has been a security threat or a higher alert level. They probably will have police passing regularly throughout the daytime though.

I'm on a MAN spotting Yahoo group; it seems the police have had no issues with spotters at either the AVP or the south side, which is great to hear!

MAN should be seen as an example to all other airports that spotters are not the problem, they are part of the solution. I'm glad that even at 'critical' security level the AVP can stay open and I didn't expect anything else. Anyway surely if you are going to have people prowling the airport trying to take photos of aircraft it is better to have them in a controled environment.

Perhaps that's only because the person reponsible for the viewing park is also chairman of The Aviation Society. That situation will have to change at some stage, and with plans for future development including the land the viewing park currently occupies we can't rely on MAN being enthusiast friendly forever.

This is why it is moving to the other side of the airfield.

The opening hours are 8:30am until dusk. When you arrive at the park there is a sign displaying the closing time and last entrance time for that day. As a guide I would suggest that you use the published sun set time for that day.

They closed it, and all the local side roads when a PIA B747 had a bomb scare a few years ago. I was there at the time.

I was on the south side the day after all of the airports were at high alert level and there was a lot more police around; on horses, in cars and on foot but they behaved just like they do any other normal day.
