DC-10 Fan Club- Eye Of The Trijets Flights

Sun Aug 13, 2006 2:49 pm

This is something new, saw a few interesting flights tonight and thought i share and get some feedback, considering there seems to be many dissapointed with NWA accelerating the retirement of thier Diesel 10's.

Does anyone have any information about the following flights:

NWA9849 EHAM-KEWR
NWA9988 KEWR-LEBL
ACA1998 CYYZ-EDDF (Didnt know Air Canada had DC10's)

Another question: How much longer will DC10s for NWA actually be in service? Will they keep them on the Hawaii routes longer?

If you see any rare or odd DC10 flights, please list them in this post, keep it goin!!!

AC doesn't have DC-10s - although I think there may have still been one CP DC-10-30 in service when they took over CP. That flight in question is a Gemini wet lease freighter.

That's an A330 now. For AMS only MSP and MEM are still with the DC10. Early 2007 they should both be with the A330, but I do not know precise dates.

This was a charter of some sort. KLM operates EWR-AMS. This was an actual NW DC-10 that was on the ground at EWR. I saw it there yesterday afternoon and was wondering why it was there. It left early this morning as a charter back to Barcelona. Does anyone know why these flights were operated?

All of the NW "Transatlantic" DC-10s will be gone by October 31st, 2006. From then on, all NWAs transatlantic flights will be flown by A330s.

After the above date, the only DC-10 flight remaining at NW will be MSP - HNL, but this will convert to an A330 from January 8th 2007.

After January 8th 2007, all of the NW DC-10s will be in the desert, or scrapped.

I am planning to fly MEM-AMS on standby at the end of this month to take my first (and probably last) DC10 flight.

The DC10 has become a rare aircraft, and after NW and BG, I can not think of any other current pax operators of the type... Anyone??

I like the DC-10 myself. I thought it was a very unique design to have two wing-mounted engines with the third mounted at the base of the tail fin. That was awesome!! I just wish that bird could have evolved into something else...

The same thing with the T-tail aircraft. Given that this thread's title mentions "trijets fans," I will go ahead and state that my favorite T-tail aircraft was and still is the 727...

This has to be the one that flew in from EWR. It operated on Friday from AMS into EWR as 9849. It left early Sunday AM as 9988 to Barcelona, and then back to MSP as 9841. Anyone have any idea what kind of charters these were?

The discussions have been on-going for several months. NWA has been the hold-up since they have more pressing matters (i.e. bankruptcy). As of yesterday, it IS still on the table. I am not at liberty to divulge anything further though.

Thanks for the update and I understand the need to be tight lipped. This would require ATA to recall lots (if not all) of their furloughed flight crew and that would be great!!

Northwest Airlines has 19 DC-10's on service.

Amsterdam, Newark, Los Angeles and Minneapolis are the main destinations served with NW DC10's.

Quoting Embajador3 (Reply 5):

Santa Barbara has returned D10's to their lessor PACA (Pacific Aviation Holding Company). No idea where parked.

Until S3 will receive its second 767, they have wet-leased a 313 from Air Plus Comet.

It's second 763 will come from LAB Airlines. At the moment is stored at GIG.

Couldn't they find used 763's or A300s or something to fit the bill that don't suck down gas like a DC-10 or L-1011?

ATA retiring the 727 genuinely surprised me. I kinda miss their screamingly loud, smoke trail leaving presence...

I wonder where NW's DC-9s will find homes after they are retired? I wonder if you couldn't buy one of those for cheap off of them.

Very clever  sarcastic  I love all of you arm-chair CEOs that think everything is so simple as 'Old with 3 engines' = BAD, 'New with 2 engines' = GOOD. Its never always that simple. This topic has been discussed many times before.

A 767-300 is the perfect aircraft for both military and commercial charter missions. However, the downsides for ATA are several. It is very difficult aircraft to find on the lease or purchase market, its acquisition costs are prohibitive, and the lease rates are well past $600K/month. The high lease rates demand a very high utilization which is difficult with the ad-hoc nature of commercial and military charter.

While a DC-10 is not optimal, the aircraft is supported by Boeing while the TriStar is essentially no longer supported by Lockheed and the acquisition costs are cheaper and more suited to ad-hoc charter ops. The fuel costs are much higher than a 767, but the military covers most of the fuel expense. Ask yourselves this: If the ATA military charter operation is solidly profitable with using L-1011s, which it is, why can't DC-10s be equally profitable if not more due to its slight advantages?

Quoting ATA767 (Reply 31):

Like I mentioned above, the AMC largely covers the cost of fuel for military missions at contract prices.

A300s are domestic widebodies which have neither the range nor capacity required. 763s are actually still being considered if a good business case can be made to lease some at acceptable rates.

On one hand you belittle ATA for flying fuel inefficient L-1011s and potential DC-10s and then are surprised the 727's where retired? The 727s had to go because their reliability was unsustainable for scheduled ops.

Mr. FlyDreamliner, it is so easy to criticize, but you know not of which you speak.
