Minimum Dimensions For Checked Bag?

Mon Aug 14, 2006 3:31 am

I'm shocked not to find this using search (and I'm sure a bunch of you will jump on me and find lots of old threads -- thanks!) and on airline sites, but what are the minimum dimensions for a checked bag? The new regulations may finally make this a non-trivial rule.

There typically isn't a minimum size. Most (if not all) airlines have a max bag size and weight, and if the bag exceeds that, they add a fee. For example, FL allows a bag up to 62 inches (length+width+height). Any bag that is 63"-80" has an additional $65 charge per bag and anything over 80" is not accepted (with some sporting equipement exempted [like skis]). DL has a similar policy, but charge $100 per bag for any bag between 63"-80".

I don't think there's a minimum, either ... I've seen stuff as small as ladies purses, or small boxes come up the bag belts.

Usually the rampers will toss smaller stuff in plastic bins, to make it easier to move around.

Cool, thanks. So you guys think I could check, say, an old airline amenity kit, just hypothetically? I guess in reality it's likely to get left in the hold or otherwise lost, but I'm glad to hear about the plastic bins, that makes it less likely.
