Will LH Resume PHX Service?

Mon Aug 14, 2006 10:19 am

I remember back a couple of years ago when LH pulled out of PHX, due to poor loads (I think). And I was wondering now with USairways` operation at PHX could this maybe bring back LH to PHX. Before everyone flames me about how it didnt work before so why would it now? Think about this. The Phoenix area is still booming more and more every month, and now fellow Star Alliance carrier USairways could feed more passengers to this flight. I would think that Lufthansa would want to put some pressure on British Airways for getting some of the European bound pax from PHX, and even other points around the southwest such as LAS, ABQ, and even SNA, SAN, SMF, SJC for people who dont really want to fly into SFO, and LAX and deal with the messes there. So what do you guys think, I really think that a PHX-MUC would work, or maybe a PHX-FRA would be a money maker this time around. I am willing to bet an A343 would fill this route well maybe 4-5 times a week. Maybe even a A346.

Actually the reason for the flight in the first place was that Arizona's non-U.S. tourist counts were Canada, Mexico (legal arrivals), U.K., then Germany. I think what would clinch LH coming back would be the purchase of one of the Phoenix area companies.

My father works for a major company here in PHX and is leaving for Germany on Sat. 8/19. And they have a contract with UA and LH. His routing will be PHX-LAX-MUC-ORD-PHX. This is what made me think about this topic. I could really see this route doing well.

From what I read in the local papers, according to Mr. Parker( US CEO) he expects LH to be returning to PHX within a year.

LTU flew here as well. Seeing LH go was a bummer. Looking forward to more than BA serving my home to Europe. At least we have a non-stop.

That and we are the fifth largest city in the US in terms of population. Wish we had more international flights.

While I'd love to see LH back at PHX as it is in the middle of one of my favourite holiday destinations, I wonder to what extend that extra service to PHX would pipe-off pax from LH's other services to LAX, SFO, DEN and ORD (including the UA-codeshares into these airports). Not ot forget the seasonal flights 2pw to LAS on DE.

OP's-question:
Will the A343 be prone to load restrictions for takeoff during hot summer at PHX ?
When LH served PHX (at least when I used the route), they utilized a A342 ...
And DE is having range problems on its B763ER's out of LAS in (very) hot weather, thus making fuelstops in MAN enroute to FRA.

I was on one of the first FRA/PHX flights and the 343 was full to PHX and back to FRA as well, with people from all over Europe. The fact that USAir merged with AWE should make this route even more viable.

Can't remember either that LTU ever flew to PHX, although their L1011 could be seen at TUS sometimes......

LTU was actually the first European carrier I think to serve PHX. Flights only operated once a week, I think SAT only with a L-1011. After that, Ba entered with their DC-10 service via LGW that tagged onto SAN, and then LH announced service. Numerous times when I was down in PHX you could hear the LH agents making announcements that due to weight restrictions that the airline was offering vouchers and cash to bump people. The last time I heard them was a first class seat the following day, an $800 LH travel voucher, and an amount of USD $ 150 cash for the overnight. They needed 20 something volunteers and nobody was up for it. Didn't get to see how it ended cuz my HP flight boarded, but it was interesting watching them try to beg people to leave the next day

Those very first flights were deeply discounted and thus might have attracted additional pax (they also caught me with this offer and lured me to fly to PHX to spend my first vacation around TUS in April 2001).

Do you remember if LH still used a A340 by then or was it in the late stages of the service i.e. when it was downgraded to a B763 ?

The inaugural offer was around DM 650 RT, which was a steal. We went in April 01 as well.

LTU did indeed service PHX for some time
