KLM: Why No MD-11 Combi?

Tue Aug 15, 2006 10:42 pm

KL seems to love its fleet of 744 combis (74E), so why didn't they buy the MD-11Combi, too ? It seems especially odd as they have a large MD-11 pax fleet.
Exceptions confirm the rule.

The mission of the KLM MD11 fleet has mostly been to haul a relatively large number of passengers - the current configuration seats more passengers than the B74E combi, and the retrofitted MD11 will seat even more - to mostly lower yielding, often holiday-like destinations, which I presume to be lighter in cargo demand than the destinations where KLM sends its 16-strong B74E fleet. The addition of a couple of MD11 combis would enter a new configuration into the fleet and further complicate operational planning. KLM's 10-strong MD11 fleet is not all that big, so introducing subtypes would not necessary be conducive for the stability of the operation.

Plus the MD-11C hasn't really been a popular model. AZ was the only carrier to fly MD-11Cs, and it has cost them a lot, since they couldn't get rid of them when they phased out the MD-11 fleet due to the rear side cargo door and related handling issues. LCAG was a candidate for those Combis, but they rejected them and only took the full PAX ones up for conversion.

AFAIK, Douglas only sold 6 MD-11Cs, out of 200 MD-11s.

There is also the fact that the MD-11 already has a pretty large lower-deck cargo hold which has made a number of KL MD-11 flights more profitable then they were.
They also fly the MD-11 on routes with high pax numbers, the carribean for example, and the pax alone make some of these flights pure cash-cows.
Zanair flight, please hold on finals as we have to clear rhino's off the runway. Next flight KUL-FRA-AMS Flown in A319,A
