Missed It By 1"?

Wed Aug 16, 2006 9:17 am

I'll be flying KLM, JFK-AMS in two days, and one of my checked bags ( A GIFT) is a 33 lbs. box. Total dimensions 63". KLMs allowance is 62". I called NWA/KLM last night and the customer service rep. told me that it should be OK, but if they happen to be very strict, it will cost me $125. And also she told me that the flight will be almost full, still 20 seats avail.
What do you guys suggest? Should I take my chances? Should I arrive early at the airport? ( Duuuh!) Should I try to somehow squeeze the box? (Not recommended)
Thanks for your ideas.

Missed my weight allowance on my business return by 6lbs this weekend. Reason, my installers left a tool in my bag... you can risk it and they may be nice...but man up if your caught.

How exactly would they measure the dimensions. I have a bag that is EXACTLY 62" when I measure it.
Thanks,

Most carriers have tape measures at the counter now with the increased attention being paid on excess luggage. However...if it is just an inch I would suspect it to be waved as is one pound routinely. If worse to worse tell them it is due to accomadating carryon baggage due the new restrictions...a lot of carriers have waivers to their frontline troops on this...not a lot...not all carriers...but it is out there.

It will depends if it is going to be your lucky day or not. I know that KLM agents in AMS can be very strict. Especially with overweight etc. It all depends on the agent you get at the counter.

Totally up to yourself but unless someone in JFK is going to be anal, I personally would chance it. After all, it's only 33lbs and it's not as if it won't fit into the containers.

Id say chance it. I was flying back to BDL and in AUA we had one bag at 56 pounds and another at 43. I asked if it was ok for me to move stuff around to make it fit. But he just slapped a heavy tag on it and sent me on my way. Nice guy.

In my experience, if it is one or two pounds or inches over the limit, they let it slide. I once had a box that was close to 70 inches and CO let me check it in with no charge. I had the cash waiting expecting to be charged, but it was very light (15 pounds max) so that may have been a mitigating factor. The lengh restrictions often bother me more than the weight, cause I can balance the weight out between 2 suitcases, but if I need to move something large, I can't exactly break it in half and put the pieces in separate suitcases.

If the service rep at the check-in counter does not charge you for overweight or over-lengh baggage by mistake, could the airlines then charge you at the baggage claim, or do they just forget about the charge?

my luggage is almost always overweight, just by a few lbs even. The thing to do is go to curbside check in, before the guy weighs the bag, slip him a few dollars. It has always worked for me. But i always give them a tip anyways....

If you are flying international you can not do curbside check-in

My last huge European trek (4 weeks hiking in 2004) my bags were overweight and at LHR we had to through clothes away. The CSA at the BA counter was so nice, weighing our bags 4 times till we made the weight exactly.

On the other hand, my best friend and his wife moved back from New Zealand after a years stay (2005) and were overweight on their bags and the Air New Zealand CSA said no big deal and didn't charge them an overage fee.

I wouldn't risk it!  twocents   bouncy

Well, assume you will have to pay that or even get denied to check in the bag. Why take your chances? Send it by Fedex or UPS. It'll cost less. Maybe.
Just a thought.
Good luck.

My parents were travelling via Delta to Delhi. There bags were overweight by .5 to 1 lbs each. The guy at the counter insisted on them being 50 or below. He said he would be back in 5 minutes while they took the time to take stuff out. Very rude...but thats the way things are I guess...Living in Atlanta, I fly Delta a lot and am ok with it generally...

You're at the mercy of the agent that checks you in.

I just took out my UPS book and took a look. From the East Coast to the Netherlands is upwards of $210 for 4 day delivery on a 33 pounder. Best bet is to take it with, and just to be aware that they may charge extra.

The dimension of gate checks is even less...something like 45".

But it likely won't fit into the sortation system...and it will take the TSA longer to screen and the ramp longer to load (OK, I'm being the Devil's Advocate).

Here is the latest,
I decided to take with me a big box, tape, and a piece of cord that is exactly 158cm. If they won't accept it, I will try to divide it into two boxes, and cut the original box to below total 62", and hope it all fits. So I will end up having two big boxes. That is OK, since I really don't have any other stuff besides my carry-on.
More soon.

No different to oversized luggage such as golf clubs, surf boards etc. I took my clubs to Jamaica with me recently and it didn't take any longer to receive them upon arrival into MBJ.

On a recent F9 flight, I was overweight by 0.5 pounds. The agent was nice enough to let it slide by without the overage fee, especially since I would have just slipped a couple pairs of socks into my wife's suitcase.

Understand a couple of things
Most airlines have stopped any waiver on charging for overweight and piece count that was in place after the first day of the LHR incident.

The overweight/oversize charge in the US is being closely monitored by TSA and FAA...failure to comply is being fined when caught. No heavy tag and the carrier is fined, if caught, and the agent is be disciplined in accord with their respective company procedures.

Why? FAA attributes over 50 pound baggage without notice as a possible cause in an aircraft incident...namely the USAir express at CLT. Their investigation has revealed far more baggage is heavier than the original 24 pound industry standard 20 years ago.

Is it fair? Should you complain? To the FAA if you wish but stop beating up the skycap or checkin agent...

I've had oversized luggage (72 inch long aircraft tubing in box) miss flights when all my other luggage made it. That said, most of the time oversized luggage has not been a problem for me.

Here is final episode.
I arrived at JFK at 3pm, for the 6:10pm departure.
It was a bit crazy around the self check-in eticket counters, but it went quickly,
I was able to get boarding passes and put in the number of bags. After a few minutes
A KLM/NWA counter agent came with our tags, and she started putting them on. When she came to the big box, she asked if it was overweight, and I said No way, it is only 33lbs.
That was it.
25 min. after entering JFK, I was having a beer next to my gate.
I sometimes think I over think these stuff.
But the best part of it, after landing at AMS I got to visit the cockpit of the KLM 772, and 738 after landing at IST, and a TK 313 in DLM...wow!!! A trip report coming up when I get back.
