Which Airlines Will Come Back To BEY

Wed Aug 16, 2006 2:13 pm

While BEY remains closed, at any point we should expect an announcement that it will reopen. Any guesses which airlines will or won't come back

I think MH used to have a flight going there, cos when I flew back from Sydney in 2003, the flight was to BEY via KUL.

Don't know if they still run it though.

An ever increasing number of airlines were operating at Beirut prior to the recent events and I'm sure many will return gradually, some sooner than others.

I'd expect ME the home carrier then CY, MS, RB and RJ to be first, closely followed by AF, AZ, EK, EY, LH, KU, MS, OA, SV, TK. Then the load of smaller operators (regarding their BEY ops) like AH, AT, ET, KL, LO, MA, RO, etc. BA may be more cautious but I foresee a return, MH is unsure because of their current worldwide restructuring and the charters & seasonals (LT, OS, a couple others) will probably appear once there is enough of a season to their liking again.

We still have to see how long it will take to get the airport repaired. Anybody knows how bad is the damage? I remember during the first weeks of the conflict the airport was badly bombed but I am not sure about how bad is it.

They did run it right up to when the airport was closed. I was on their site the other day looking at fares and they had a notice that the BEY flight was moved to Damascus IIRC.

I woulld expect them to return. This is from a press release on a BMed aircraft being used in evacuation flights from Cyprus to LGW:

Quote:
Beirut is a very special destination for BMED. It was the route that launched our company some 12 years ago

Quote:
Having flown into Beirut more than 30,000 times since 1994, we felt that we owed it to our valued customers and all those stranded in Beirut, who are seeking to escape the troubles, to offer our help with emergency efforts wherever we could.

That is why, in the height of our busy summer season, we were quick to offer our assistance to the British Embassy in Lebanon and to the FCO with their emergency plans. We are delighted that we have been asked to help this weekend by bringing home to the UK those who will have made the journey from Lebanon to Cyprus.”

BMed clearly have close links with Beirut and Lebanon and so I would epxect them to resume limited services fairlu quickly after BEY re opens

So the big question is...

When will BEY re-open???

Any news from Beirut on this? Assuming there is nothing but flowers & happiness in Lebanon from the cease-fire forwards, how fast can BEY re-open?

What a disgraceful thing to do to an unarmed population. Why destroy civilian infrastructure like that? In any case, word is that the airport will reopen in the next few days, at least in some form. The taxiway that MEA used to evacuate their planes was once a runway so using it for civilian ops isn't so implausible. And I'm sure the terminal, in it's damaged state, is no worse than the old terminal was during the civil war.

And as for WHICH airlines, I predict all of them will return. There will be a lot of traffic for reconstruction, returning residents who were evacuated, and also foreigners who saw Lebanon during the attack, not as a "terrorist state" or as the old Lebanon of the 80s wracked by division and war, but a united and broadly pro-western nation wrongfully targetted by a belligerent neighbour, who'd like to show some solidarity. I would like to go there as soon as possible.

I think BEY needs all the support it can get now...Beirut is safe indeed!!

I wonder what the airfares are going to be like??? Hopefully Airlines offer good rates as a welcome back service incentive

Guys, you fail to grasp that the tourism industry for this year atleast has been ruined. Many people that might have had Lebanon on their vacation maps have long decided on other destinations.

In addition I know of atleast two multi national corporations which have decided to close their regional offices which were located in Beirut for good. One moving to the UAE, while the other plans on Turkey.

As a result business travel demand, particularly the non essential trips along with tourism traffic will be down for the foreseeable future.

Things will not snap back to pre war demand levels for some time as people reconsider the value of investing in or visiting Lebanon.

Ethiopian had loaded schedules to BEY as of November to be daily. However, the closure of the airport and the chaos in the country came a week or two after this change.

BMED will position an aircraft to BEY today (17 August) and will fly their first commercial BEY-LHR service tomorrow (18 August). I assume that the positioning flight is because at short notice selling seats would be difficult but assume there will be no trouble filling or nearly filling the aircraft on the return journey with many residents anxious to see friends and relatives after the recent hostilities.

Indeed.

BEIRUT, Lebanon - A Middle East Airlines passenger jet flew into Beirut airport from Jordan on Thursday as officials partially lifted a 36-day Israeli air blockade.

While it might be a too bit early, it would be nice to see an American-based carrier to BEY..maybe JFK-BEY..

I know its a bit off because of the political climate, but maybe once things "cool off" in a while an air carrier will take a chance at it....

I could see CO or possibly DL taking a go at it....but as I mentioned, not for a while....

Where those regular commercial flights? What was the makeup of the passengers? Why would the Israelis lift the blockade just for those particular flights and not on all civil aviation? My understanding is that the "criminal" blockade is still on.

Man... I remember just a few years ago a few people, at least, on this forum were dreaming/talking about when would El Al (and Palestinian Airways) start service to BEY, and MEA recipricolly to TLV (and Gaza). Having flown El Al to Cairo a `mere' 25 years after the end of hostilities there, one can always hope.

No. The passengers included members of the Save the Children Fund, Lord Hesketh (Chairman of BMED) and other invited dignitaries. One of the reasons why BA in the form of BMED is back early in BEY is that the inaugural destination when what was then Brtitish Meditewrranean Airways was BEY.

Quoting Yegbey01 (Reply 30):

I'm not certain but am pretty sure it was LHR-BEY direct. Certainly when the flight departed LHR the arrival time in BEY was announced which, under the circumstances seemed to me to be a little risky although this may have been done to warn the combatants of the impending arrival of a civil aircraft.

BEY just need any route that can make money and bring business in the country, including flights to/from Syria and Iran, excluding all political consideration.

Too true. I think part of Lebanon's economic recovery during the 90s and into this century is a result of the complete deregulation of Beirut, any airline can fly to and from anywhere else, hence JAT's Belgrade-Beirut-Dubai and similar fifth freedoms enjoyed by airlines like Ethiopian, Belavia, British Mediterranean et al. (And in the case of Iranian or Syrian airlines, they should be the last to be excluded; let's be honest, Syria and Iran especially have proved to be loyal allies to Lebanon whether you like them or not, certainly compared to the USA, UK, Europe, or even most other Arab nations - Saudi, Jordan, Egypt only proved themselves to be completely unable to help Sister Lebanon in her hour of need.)

Also FYI, Malev are officially Beirut's most loyal foreign airline (with the possible exception of Cyprus Airways, who, being only 20 mins away, were able to assess the danger on an hour-by-hour basis, maintaining some service even during periods of heavy fighting); whereas most other airlines stopped flying to Beirut as soon as the civil war started in 1975, Malev maintained it's schedule from Budapest, indeed one of their evening flights crashed into the sea short of the city on approach at the end of 75, some say it was shot down as this was at the height of the first part of the civil war. Also interesting that Balkan were flying to Beirut throughout the 70s, one of their Tupolev 154s ran out of fuel circling the airport and crashed into a Druze hillside southeast of the city during the civil war. One of the reasons eastern European airlines were so keen on Beirut was cos they were flying a lot of Soviet arms to all the Lebanese militias, on passenger flights. LOT baggage handlers in Warsaw went on strike because of the volume of weapons they were loading onto Beirut-bound flights. So LOT and Balkan did more flying than most to Beirut during those troubled times, but it was Malev who dug in the most, only stopping flights when Beirut airport was actually closed to all traffic. Interesting to note, 30 years later, that while Washington is chastising Iran for allegedly sending arms to Hezbollah, Israel is angrier with Russians - a lot of the spent ammunition that fell on cities like Haifa has turned out to be Russian. Plus ca change, plus ca meme chose.

I suspect for the next couple of weeks, there will be limited service at BEY due to the damage of the facilities, the need to prioritize recovery goods and returning citizens, and most importantly to put into place strict security protocols. One priority will be the to prevent the airport from becoming a conduit for weapons for any of the various groups in the country. I suspect that tourism, which Beriut and the area was a very important business there especially from many middle Eastern countries, will be limited until facilities and insfastrucure are restored.
I would also suspect that under pressure from Israel, the USA and possibly other countries, Iran Air and Syrian Airlines will not be allowed to operate in/out of BEY for an indefinite time for obvious political reasons and to limit their ability to resupply Hezbollah and related groups.
