9W 117 Emergency Landing At BOM - Incident + Pics

Wed Aug 16, 2006 5:11 pm

Hi All,

Had a chance to witness the emergency landing of Jet Airways flight 9W-117 at BOM last Sunday. The aircraft in question - an Airbus A340 was flying the LHR-BOM sector and apparently developed problems in one of its engines.

Here are a couple of pics I clicked:

In the first picture, you can clearly make out something wrong with the outer starboard engine. Engine experts, can anyone make out what's wrong here?

P.S. I could not post these pics on Airliners.net due to quality issues. Sad

I'm not an engine expert, but I'd be willing to say that you captured a bird in front of the number 4 engine...that's based on the other bird flying below the plane in the picture...

Nope, it was not a bird, that I can vouch for sure! It would be too much of a coincidence to click a bird nicely centered inside the engine housing, wouldn't it?

It depends when he declared the emergency. Was it on finals or further out?

To me it looked like the engine was shut down, but I don't know that much lol

Difficult to tell from the Distance. But #4 does not seem to be Windmilling & the odd shape in front of the Spinner is confusing.
Anyone aware of the Snag.

These pics were taken near Saki Naka? The white object is unlikely anything wrong with the engine and I also THINK that its a bird. Anyway, thats my two naye paisa!

Unless there is some other explanation, I tend to agree.

No. But, it would demonstrate some very impressive photography skills... bigthumbsup  wink

Think MEL has it right here... What appears to be a odd shape in front of the spinner is actually the stripe that is painted on the spinner - seems unusual and odd to see it this way in flight but that is what the fan/spinner look like when not rotating. Curious what would seize up the engine like that and stop it from windmilling.

Bearing Failure would cause that... If it is, this will be the 2nd 9W engine to loose a bearing in as many months!

Hi All,

This was positively not a bird. I confirmed this with my cousin, who was spotting with me at the time. Also, if you zoom into the pic and observe closely, you can see that the white "patch" appears to be inside the engine housing and bang in the center of the housing. Strange!

The only pic which comes close to this is here, where you can see the black-white stripes on the spinner cone:

There is no word from Jet Airways on the cause of the engine failure.
