Who Runs Term A At IAD For UA?

Fri Aug 18, 2006 2:32 am

I won't bother you folks with my miserable experience recently flying UA from IAD to BUF and back on Mesa because that would belong in a different forum.

My experience in Terminal A, however, was even worse than the flight.

* We had two flights boarding to RDU out of A1 within five minutes of each other. Talk about how to confuse passengers.

* Announcements were made on top of announcements.

* The gate agent at the door out to the aircraft was boarding four flights at once and not paying attention to what anyone's boarding pass said.

* I witnessed one UAX employee curse out another UAX employee in front of passengers.

* Six people boarded our plane who were not bound for Buffalo and had to be deplaned.

I won't even get into the onboard service from Mesa. What I am wondering is if I should confine my dissatisfaction to Mesa, or if there were above and below wing providers I should be upset with.

That experience (a few weeks ago, mind you) was enough to force this UA Premier Exec flyer over to DCA to fly US mainline to BUF instead.

Silly me to think that getting rid of Terminal G would make UAX flying better.

I actually didn't mind terminal G. Although express operations can always get messy. I particularly hate when they board multiple flights at the same time. I was in Chicago at gate B22 which is the only United Express gate in the B concourse and they were boarding two flights at the same time at the same gate. That is confusing enough with no one giving directions since one was an E170 at a jetbridge and the other was an ERJ-145 sitting out on the ramp. However the planes were headed to two cities that have names that are very easy confuse: Minneapolis and Indianapolis.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

But there is, in fact, a B22 and a B22A with different doors.

At Concourse A at Dulles, its far more confusing.

I dunno whose fault it is... but you have to admit, Concourse A is a very attractive looking facility.

It's a shame you had to fly through terminal A. On my latest UAX flight, my flight used a gate on Concourse D. Had a jetway connected to airstairs, and was boarding just one flight. Anyway, I want to say that Air Wisconsin handles UAX at IAD, but I can't be certain if that is correct or not. I am sure that someone that knows the operation better will have the correct answer for you.

Yes, much better than the bus-terminal-dropped-on-the-airport Terminal G. Those infernal alarms on the exit doors that go off every three minutes, however, are not. Doesn't matter how attractive the terminal is, if the folks who are running it can't operate it without confusing the life out of the passengers, pretty doesn't help.

UAX uses a couple gates in C & D, but the vast majority of the flights go out of A. I'm pretty sure different carriers use different terminals. For example, Mesa and Colgan go out of A.

Sounds about par for the course in Terminal A- now try it when they cancel a flight... I had a Mesa flight to LGA cancel on me- I found out when the flight disappeared from the list at the gate. When I asked the gate agent what was up with the flight she just said 'cancelled' that was it, no 'sorry' or any other advice, just cancelled. I was lucky to get on a Colgan flight to HPN as it was 8pm and I was on the last flight to LGA. I think the customer service reps were UAL, but the gate agents were for the respective UAX carriers.

Very sorry that you had such an experience at Washington's Concourse A. I assure you that United is better than this.

I cannot say I have ever had a really bad problem with United mainline in seven years of flying for business. There have been moments when I felt they could have handled a weather situation better, but it was almost always rectified by the sophisticated computer system that rebooks you automatically - and far more precisely than a human doing it.

But UAX leaves a LOT to be desired. Especially their ops at IAD.

B22 and B22A use the same door from the terminal, so it is confusing and I nearly got lost, but I showed up late to the gate after flying long haul from Europe that same day.

Overall if you fly United Express, you won't get a good idea of what United is all about. UAX is no where near as good as mainline, although explus is pretty good.

Yes,but it looks alot better than it did when DH used it . It's much better than ORD's F gates. At least they can say the name of the cities correct. Nothing like an Indian trying to pronounce Syracuse. No offfense.....

There are people with accents working for all airlines at stations around the world. A Gate agent for mainline UA at IAD the other day had a heavy accent, but was understandable. There are more problems with the F Gates than the Customer service agents that work them. Seating can be quite sparse in some of the gate lounges when flights are boarding. I have to say though that the express situation @ ORD Is a LOT better than it was a year ago. As I said earlier, I had a great experience with express @ IAD as we were using a D gate and that was one flight for one gate.

Part of a letter I wrote to United in May regarding my experience:

"My flight’s scheduled arrival time in Washington was 3:35 PM. While we arrived on time or possible earlier, the official arrival time was not until 3:51 PM (according to your online flight status) because no one around was able to operate portable stairs to allow us to deplane from our Embraer 170.

"My flight was scheduled to depart from the A2 pier at 5:05 PM. At approximately 4:45 an alarm sounded, likely because a gate agent had left a SIDA door open too long. While I listened for a boarding announcement, none was made until 4:55, announcing final boarding for my flight at A2. I went to the A2 check-in, got to the front of the line five minutes, and learned that I was at the wrong boarding area, and told to go to the boarding area next to A1. Because my flight had already been closed out, I was unable to board and had to change my itinerary. The gate agent told me to proceed to United Customer Services, located in another area of the concourse, where there was only one person working during a peak time, despite a line that eventually reached about thirty people.

You are correct. UAX is ran by Air Wisconsin for Customer Service, and ground handling goes to the high quality employees of D.G.S. (owned by DL)
I wish UA flew mainline to MYR, that way you wouldn't be stuck in a smelly Saturn for 12 hours.

LOL, I agree, the UA terminal at IAD is a roach motel. I worked ther all last year and could not wait to get out of there.

They're getting much better... new paint, lighting, and carpet.

It almost looks like 1993 instead of 1984.

As for cosmetics, I have to say that Concourses C/D (especially the UA Areas) are looking much better than they did before. The whole concourse is looking very nice and clean! i was not expecting it to be as nice as it was considering what it used to look like. I commend UA and IAD management for the upgrade gone quite well. Now the AA gates and the end of D weren't as nice, but I didn't have to spend much time down there.
