Should I Give My Upgrade To My Boss?

Fri Aug 18, 2006 11:56 am

Hi Everyone,

Kind of a wierd one, but thought you all might have some interesting insight. Here's the deal.

In the next couple of months I will be traveling a lot with my boss. When we fly domestically, we are positive space in economy and get space available upgrades to first based on time of check in. If I get upgraded and he doesn't, should I give up my first class seat to him? My boss is a really cool guy and I don't think he would really 'expect' me to give it to him, but I do feel somewhat obligated. Just wondering if it's in poor taste not to offer considering he has 30 years seniority compared to my 2. If they call my name for an upgrade it's a split second decision. Any gate agents out there every see this sort of thing? You'd be suprised how many times there is only 1 seat left and two pax waiting. What would you do?(Again, I know this is lame, but really want to see what anyone has to say.)

Give it to Anet member Bill Reid, since he obviously doesn't like NRSA's getting upgrades.  Big grin

Whose paying for the ticket? It would probably show some class if it's his company footing the bill and you offer him the ticket since he's paying.

If he's as cool as you say and you offer it to him, he'll probably insist that you take it.

My boss and I swap back and forth. It's nice to have a relationship like that. Of course, we always book window seats in the exit rows anyway so there is a goodly amount of space to do work, read, sleep, doodle, etc.

Good question. We work for a European carrier, so it's a confirmed ticket through and interline agreement. So the price of the tickets doesn't come out of our budget.

I agree with Jcavinato -- rotate the upgrades. That way you can demonstrate that you are not only cool -- but fair. See if the boss can top that!

If he's anything like my boss, HELL NO, but if you gave it to him, he might cut you some slack down the road. No matter what advise you get here, I have a feeling you'll give it to him anyways  biggrin .

What does she look like?

Oh, nevermind I just read the rest of the post. I would consider doing it from time to time but don't feel obligated. Something like "Hey, I got upgraded last time, do you want this one?"

I recently flew with my boss and 2 colleagues from SFO to LHR.

I got upgraded at the gate...

and thought bugger em ! I took the seat leaving them in the back.

For them it was their first time on UA, and first ever true 10hour+ long haul...

They still make fun of me for it and I still point out.. I got the upgrade as Ive cut my metal on that route over a dozen times and turned up to work next morning...and they moan and moan and moan having only ever done it once and didnt get upgraded...

For the record.. if it would have been the other way round..

My boss would have jumped on the upgrade and I would still be hearing now how it was his social standing and seniority that got him upgraded... UA proudly helping me bring my boss down a peg or two.
So far in 2008 45 flights and Gold already. JFK, IAD, LGA, SIN, HKG, NRT, AKL, PPT, LAX still to book ! Home Airport LCY

Offer him the upgrade.

It 's a good test, if he takes it then you have confirmed that he is a chump.
(but you may already know the answer to that)

Do you arrive at the airport at the same time, and therefore have an equal chance of getting an upgrade?

If there is a reason you would get selected over him (e.g. you get there first) -- then I say no, except now and then if you get a bunch in a row w/o him, it would be a nice gesture.

If there is no reason you would get it over him (e.g. just random), then yes, i think it's nice to trade-off.

I've been in the same situation many times before -- either with elite upgrades or when traveling space positive like you. On one or two occasions, I've been in F and my boss has been in Y. Usually I don't know he's not up front until I see him walk down the aisle and go into the back....it can be akward, but my bosses have always been pretty cool and once in a while it isn't going to hurt you (but be careful, because with some bosses, even once WILL hurt you, so you have to make a call on his personality).

Just my thoughts...

LHUSA,

Did I understood correctly that you work for an airline? If so, is the policy really so that the upgrade is based on he check-in time, not on the seniority? In "my" airline all upgrades are based purely on seniority so if my boss hass less years of service than me, I would get the upgrade no matter what time I and he check-in.

Cheers,

Well, it oftens happens to me...either with my Fiance or a colleague. In both cases neither of us take the upgrade if the other also doesn't get it.

You are talking about domestic flights, where apart from coast-coast, the flight times are probably 1-2 hours. If my boss was cool I'd rather refuse the upgrade and chat with him in coach, rather than sit next to someone I don't know for an hour and risk some kind of attitude issue.

Now...for an international flight it's a different matter.

I would say if you like him and have a good relationship, offer him the upgrade - it shows a little respect and will go a long way.

At my job, there are 7 of us on the account team. We all travelled together recently, and the most senior of us all has no status on DL what so ever, while three of us were Medallion.

My immediate supervisor just jumped at the chance to get into F-class as did another coworker. I, however went over to our Global Director and basically said - "Hey, I got upgraded, would you like to sit up front so you don't have to be uncomfy in the back" (he's a tall guy) He declined, responding with "You've earned it, but thanks a lot for asking"

Three months later, when it was raise/review time, I got an extra $3K above what the company was giving to my level because he fought for it. I know $3K isn't a lot, but it was definitely a nice "Thank You"

Thanks for the responses everyone! Some really good thoughts and ideas. I'm sure after all the angst, that all of our flights will check in full in F anyway and we'll both be sitting in Y. If anything interesting happens though, I'll be sure to write a trip report.

Yes, we do, however when we fly domestically we are not on our airline. So, all space aviailable upgrades are based on time of check-in. I'm always early, he's always late.

Lucky you that you get upgrades! I would ask my boss if I got upgraded if he wants to sit upfront.

Depending on the relation of course.

I think you should offer it, but that he should refuse your offer...

Does it matter the arrival time to the airport? if you get earlier you have better chance for an upgrade?

Give it to him as others have said. If he gets upgraded on the way back, he'lll give it to you if he's a good boss.

Its the same for my dad and I at the airport. When we go to ELM, I'll get upgraded on the MCO-PHL b/c of my plat stats. Whenever I go somewhere with a boss, I usually give all my extra food I get from the f/a's. In return I get pampered. So good luck.
