I remember when Virgin first started, they had 2 747-100s, and were running LGW-EWR. I saw one of their 747s one night in Newark and thought to myself: "This little airline doesn't stand a chane on the London-New York route. They'll get eaten alive!" Guess I was slightly mistaken. Hats off to Virgin for being creative and innovative and carving out their slice of the pie!

I think Virgin is a great airline. They have a unique approach to flying. Even Economy is good!

Actually, Virgin started with one plane and it was not
a 747-100 but a 747-200 ironically. That same plane,
nicknamed Maiden Voyager, still flies today, mainly
out of Heathrow to Washington DC/Dulles. As of May
2000, the aircraft had not been repainted in the new
color scheme.

Virgin only operated one 747-100, which it acquired
in 1991. It was called Spirit of Sir Freddie and was
used mainly on the Gatwick-Boston, Gatwick-EWR,
and Heathrow-JFK route. The plane was retired in
January and has since been scrapped. Even though
it was a 747-100, it had seatback videos (although
quite primitive compared to the rest of the fleet),
and the cabin was comfortable and just as stylish
and unique as the A340's, 747-400's, and 747-200
in the fleet.

Richard Branson and the rest of the employees did an excellent job and my hats go off to them. It's really nic to see the atractive female FAs on one of the world's favorite airlines along with manecures, massages by the drop dead gorgous female FA ( on my last EWR-LHR flight) PTVs and nintendo 64s in everyseat even in economy. where else can you find all this on other airlines?

Having flown on VS from EWR to LHR last month, I cannot praise them highly enough. They were truly superb. It is great to see an airline growing so healthily and long may it continue; it deserves to do well.
