I look forward to seeing the ASDA 747 taxiing down a highstreet near you!

Where does the 747 come from?

Seems to be an ex-Olympic Airways 747-212B.

Cool scheme. Although I still prefer the old OA colours that they painted over. I have many memories flying this aircraft.

LOL!!! I absolutely love it. It's just as good as the spoof EZY 747 in Airlinerworld a year gone April.

FI: UK Supermarket Chain Unveils 747 In Ful Livery

Tue Aug 22, 2006 12:02 am

A UK supermarket chain owned by global consumables giant has repainted a retired Boeing 747-200 in its livery, to mark the company's best delivery drivers.

The de-commissioned aircraft bears the registration G-ASDA, which has not been registered with the UK Civil Aviation Authority. G-ASDA was last used on a Beech Aircraft 65-80 Queenair twin turboprop and was de-registered in 1989, making the registration available for re-use...

Is this the 747 that is at the track where BBC's Top Gear is filmed? You always see a 747 in the background when they are going round the racetrack.

Nah, that's at Dunsfold, just a few hundred yards from my house. The B747-200 there is G-BDXJ, and ex-EAF and BA aircraft.

I didn't think it was possible to re-assign UK registrations? Though I realise G-ASDA isn't real.

Its not possible. The only time it ever happens is for the same airframe. I.e. some of the charter airlines aircraft get Canadian registrations over the winter but go back to their UK registration on return.

Like you said, the G-ASDA is purely cosmetic.

I wonder how much this cost them? Probably a 100,000 Pounds +! Guess they can't get on TV enough with ads and billboards are not allowed in much of the UK so this is a substitute. At least it doesn't have the smiley face....

Oh no, Asda manage to get their advertisements everywhere, tv, billboards you name it. This is novel way, propably for the 2007 ASDA corporate Calendar or something, to get yet more publicity. Cost won't be a problem for them.

Drop in the ocean to Asda, equivavent to about 1 hour 20 minutes profit.

Of course if they really did set up an airline, they would soon be making a lot less!!

Cool!

Nothing would surprise me these days. If airline economics were as good as retail, then I'm pretty sure Tesco would have set up an airline already. Supermarkets do everything else, including pet insurance and savings accounts. The co-op will even bury you, at a competitive price.

i'd love to know how they are always going to keep low prices if they fanny around spending money painting engine-less 747s!

interesting anyway, i vote that it is made a gate guard at an Aberdeen ASDA.

I must be the only person on the planet who thinks this aircraft looks horriffic! It's absolutely vile to my eyes, and that's something I never thought I'd say about any 747!

Very simple T-ESCO but if it needs a G in front I would say G-TSCO.

This is a good idea by ASDA and looks great.
