China Eastern Airlines - Flying First Class

Tue Aug 22, 2006 6:21 pm

Hello,

I am flying 2 internal legs in China later next month with China Eastern Airlines in their A320 aircraft. I have chosen to fly first class with them but dont know what to expect. I have checked the websites etc but it only talks about first class on internation flights.

What will I get? Lounge, extra space, food?

Please help!

The plane will be set up in just F and Y class, so it is just a small cabin, simple business class style, with (if I remember well) 2 rows of seating in 2x2. Advantage is that is much quieter than the Y cabin and also you avoid the crush for boarding and diembarking (and in China, these are big advantages !!).

You will get a hot meal, which in my experience is not bad, and the F/As are generally very attentive (and better than CA and the other Chinese carriers on domestic routes). Their Englsih is acceptable, but don't speak too fast. Seating comfort is OK, but don't imagine that it is a F product in any way....

If you tell me what routes you are flying, I may be able to kelp you more.

As regards Shanghai, since it is the home base for MU, you will have the best facilities for check-in and also lounges (F and J lounges at Pudong are very acceptable). Pudong is very spacious, clean and well laid out, so you will have no problems in my view.

I in fact have never been to Xian, but I can anyway tell you that you can be sure to have a dedicated check-in and also a lounge, since this is the case at every other airport I know in China. I don't know if Xian airport has been renovated (which is the case for more and more Chinese airports) or if it is still the old standard style that you still find in many places, but in either case the fact of being in domestic F will make all the procedures much easier and quicker.

I know Beijing airport very well, but since you are arriving there, there is not much you need to know, unless you have any questions about taxis, accommodation etc. if so, I am happy to help.

Anyway, if it is your first visit to China I hope you enjoy it, it is an amazing place.

Hi,

Thanks again. I have been to China below - I visited Beijing last December. Although cold, it has to be the greatest experience of my life. Amazing.

The only other question for you is what do you get food and drink wise (1 main meal) and what entertainment? - overhead screen??

Do you live in China or just a frequent visitor.

Thanks again,
AirWales.

Glad you enjoyed Beijing, right now is the hottest time (plus sand storms), if you can go late October/early November then that is one of my favourite times, clear skies, no fog, no sand storms and not too cold.

As regards the meall on your flights: usually there is a salad or smoked salmon dish to start, then a choice of 2 hot dishes (normally beef + fish, sometimes chicken + beef etc). Then some cheese (pre-wrapped) and biscuits and a dessert (often a very sweet cake). Usual choice of juices and drinks, but only one red and one white wine. It is in fact not bad, especially for a short domestic flight, and the main dish is usually very good.

Entertainment - there are usually 2 screens, in the wall in front of row 1 on left and right side. There are various films and videos shown, but frequently with no sound, so I would say that basically there is zero entertainment !! Like I said, it is really just a small part of the cabin that is converted to a private ""business class" space, so there are no real first class facilities.

I have been going every month to China for 13 years, and have also lived there for a few years on a semi-permanent basis. But China changes so fast that experience of the country can very quickly be out of date !

Very true about your last comment.

Who do you normally fly over with. I am flying BA again and I must admit I really enjoyed the BA 777 experience last time. I generally fly VS when flying abroad as its usually transatlantic.

Hoping to go back to China again next year and doing Hong Kong, Guilin and either Shanghai or Beijing to fly home from - late october for these destinations as well?

If you are going to Beijing, Shanghai, Guilin and Hong Kong at one time, late October or early November is good in all these places. It is certainly the best time to go to HK as a visitor.

To go to China I take either AF from CDG, or KA if I am in Hong Kong. Since you like VS, you can go from LHR to PVG or HKG, and you could combine this with KA from HKG to PVG. I really recommend KA, especially their F cabin. To be sure to have this, you need to be on the A330, which they use to BJS and PVG, but not all flights.

If later you need any advice, send me an instant message and I will try to help.

It isn't one of the very old ones...but it is located incoviently far away from the city, and the usual Airport Exp. way is not extended all the way to Xi'an.

There will be a lounge, but the lounges in those smaller airports are usually nothing special. In fact often not even separated from the rest of the (noisy) terminal with anything more than a fence..

But enjoy your flights. Chinese domestic flights are usually quite good. In many ways better than american/european ones..
Last flight: SAW-CPH on H9 on 02/11/09 - Next Flights: 23/12/09 CPH-AAL on QI, 30/12/09 CPH-LHR on SK, 19/01/10 CPH-CDG-

I see you know these places as well as me !! But I still think these old lounges are not too bad, with the low seats and the free coconut milk and peanuts !

I have chosen to fly first class with them but dont know what to expect.

Waste of money. My opinion. The flight between PVG and Xian is less than 2 hours and from there to Beijing is also less than 2 hours. Like mentioned, you will be one of the first off the aircraft and that will be the only benefit you will recieve. Internal China flights are mediocore at best, have flown them many times. I am a CA man myself and am glad they upgraded their Business/First class on the SFO-PEK route.
