I might be wrong, but I don't think AA has any MD-80s flying into JFK right now...The last route I remember them being on was JFK-DFW but that is all 757s now.

Delta has a few more MD-80s into JFK these days though....

The last time I remember an MD80 being there (after the end of the MD80 DFW service) was a BOS-JFK-BOS turn about a year ago if I recall...

Last time I counted, AA has in excess of 300 daily departures from DFW on the M80 alone. It is by far the dominant a/c type at the hub and has been for years, and probably for a long time to come. They pretty much still fly them all over the system too. Heck, they even operate them DFW-XNA!

Others that I can think of are:

DFW-DCA
DFW-BWI
DFW-AUS
DFW-ABQ

And I'm sure there are still more...

There are so many AA MD-80's flying out of DFW and ORD also. It would be easier to list the routes out of DFW that AA flies with NO MD-80 aircraft:

DFW-JFK which is what the subject of the topic is all about
DFW-MIA, there are no more MD-80's at MIA
Not sure about DFW-SNA, I know most flights are 757's but I think one is a Super 80
And of course all flights to Europe and Japan, needless to say

DFW-JFK, it used to be a 727-200 until the mid 90's when the MD-80 replaced it on the route. American only flew two routes with the MD-80 aircraft out of JFK: JFK-DFW and JFK-BOS.

AA flew JFK/MIA briefly in late 90's with MD 80....lasted about 6 months.

I beleive all of these are now 738? At least when I was looking to book the route a couple months ago they were.

Also from an earlier post, I do not beleive AA mainline flies into LIT anymore.

If you are in the NYC area and want to see MD-80s, just head to LGA...Tons of AA (and DL) MD-80s there.

Along with the 738 as well, which only did JFK-KIN. And that was four years ago as well. They are the rare types on AA for JFK.

While we're on this topic, anybody know what the last scheduled AA 727 flight into JFK was?

I remember so vividly leaving my house for high school at 6:30 one morning in 2002 and seeing an AA 727 on the Canarsie Approach...I'm pretty sure it was a sub as they didn't operate 727s into JFK regularly then....

I saw one at JFK within the past year...I tried to figure out what it was subbing for but wasn't able to...

I have seen during the LGA power outage several 738s diverting, or just operating out of JFK.

The smallest mainline jet American operates at JFK is the 762. Besides that, it flies 757s, 763s, AB6s, and 777s. It streamlined the operation by removing two types that saw limited flying to the airport (the only route to see 737s and M80s after the cutbacks was DFW).

The last MD-80s and 737s were pulled from the schedules (and replaced by 757s) in 2003 or 2004.

As for DFW MD-80 routes, just about every domestic (48 contiguous states) route except Miami and New York Kennedy sees MD-80s.

What ever the amount of seats a 762 is a widebody whereas the 752 is a narrowbody and much smaller in size than a 767

N1120a & FlyDeltaJets,
I was refering to capacity, not actual size - should have clarified that.

The 757 and 767-200 are pretty close in terms of capacity as well. I think the 767-200 has a bit more floorspace than a 757-200, equivilent to 20 or so economy seats. Most airlines in the US configure their 757s to carry more than their 767-200s (at least, CO, AA and UA did).

The capacity, weight and size of the 762 are all more than the 752. The only thing the 757 has on the 767 is length. Configuration is a completely different animal.

And ended up transfering those flights to LGA, leaving JFK with no mainline service to STL.Strange, because the three daily to STL out of LGA are loaded to the gills. One would think an '80 or three on JFK-STL would trump two daily Eagle RJ's.

I remember booking JFK-MCO in 2002 for an April '03 flight and initally, equipment type was a super 80. When we flew it in 2003, it was changed to a 752. BTW: why did they drop that route? When I flew, it was packed.

Yeah, the JFK-MCO route was always packed! It was inherited from TWA.

AA added a frequency and made it 4 daily. Have no idea why it was dropped, but it did have something to do with B6 arriving on that route.

Not to pick on you, but this is an example of a common A.net fallacy - "Wow, I can't believe they dropped that flight - when I flew it, it was always full!" Full flights are not necessarily profitable flights and, in fact, may be money-pit flights. Orlando is yield hell, and it's quite likely that American quite simply couldn't charge fares high enough to cover their costs in a dirt-cheap, highly-competitive, low-yield Florida leisure market. So they dumped it.

The BDL trip was basically a revenue repositioning flight, I used to work that turn back when I was at JFK and the inbound was from SAN, which was always heavy. The outbound to BDL was light, never more than fifty bags and was to get the aircraft in position for the am departure to MIA.

BOS was basically the same thing. IIRC the inbound was KIN, but at that point in time we were handling Asiana and there would literally be one hundred connecting bags from the OZ inbound as well as the local checks. After OZ left so did the JFK-BOS section.

AAcording to the AA website, starting in Sept. there are only 2 DFW-JFK flights, both on 757, looks as if the 763 goes away. It does not show up at least through the end of November.

That makes sense. B6 coming into the market I'm also sure had a lot to do with it.

The route was dumped from JFK, but moved to LGA.

AA does LGA-MCO with 3 daily flights. B6 also serves LGA-MCO. I guess AA thought that LGA is more of an advantage to them than JFK in this market.

In fact, AA does many routes to Florida that B6 also serves but out of LGA. Only that B6 has a much larger presence.
