Finnair Hires Hundreds FAs And Pilots

Wed Aug 23, 2006 3:57 am

According to a Finnish channel MTV3, Finnair will hire over 600 FAs and pilots in next 12 months, around 100 of them pilots. Partly thanks to the strong growth in Asia, also their European traffic is growing rapidly.

Not easy to find that many pilots?

That seems like an awfully high number. It can't possibly be based on Asian expansion alone. I would guess that Finnair barely has 100 widebody pilots with its long haul fleet of 7 MD11s and 1 A340. There is major expansion coming though with Finnair. 600 people is a lot for an airline with only 45 planes and only 9,000 employees overall.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

They say their Asian traffic grows 20 per cent this year. They will get 2 new A340s next year, plus several new Embraers. It seems the expanding will go on, I would quess Seoul next, after DEL in Nov and KUL next Apr.

Noticed they actually hire around 300 new FAs, while 200 "old" ones get a full contract.

I guess this means we can expect new orders from Finnair...

Is AY looking into US-India market? If so, they have to add capacities to US/Canada, perhaps another flight to YYZ, ORD, and/or even use larger aircraft to JFK.

It has been discussed here, seems to make sense on the map but atleast yet no sign from AY. Perhaps in future when they get more widebodies, now the focus is in Europe-Asia traffic.

And Chengdu and Wuhan in China coming up after ICN, if the rumors are true... Smile

Not gonna happen I think...
I think it's really weird that they don't let you book JFK-HEL-DEL on their website. It's not the best of connections (6 h in HEL both ways) but works out fine if you want to have a little break in-between flights (or the price is right).

Two Chinese cities more? They would serve 6 cities in China after that, sounds busy!

CTU and WUH are long over due, they need to divert some of the transit passengers off PEK and PVG, furthermore, those 2 cities are also the regional hubs in terms of rail networks, economic/cultural activities.

In the 80s when AY had ONCE weekly HEL-PEK, the growth at PEK never cease to amaze me, besides new T3, they're already talking about 2nd Int'l airport, although I personally think it's better to develop another mega airport in Tianjin Municipality to replace TSN that can serve both Beijing and Tianjin.

It's truely amazing. When I was living in PEK in 1999 AY had a twice-weekly flight to PEK, the only destination in China, counting to 10 flights a month. Now AY serves PEK, PVG, CAN and HKG with 100 flights a month to China -- 10 times more than 7 years ago!.

Finnish Air Force, hold on to your F-18 pilots!

Or, in a different light... if you ever wanted to fly a jet fighter, call Finnish Air Force!  Wink
