KLM Will Not Return To Beirut

Wed Aug 23, 2006 9:07 pm

KLM will stop with the AMS-BEY flights. They stopped flying to BEY when the war broke out in lebanon, but a spokesman said they will not return. This has been a loss making route for a while now and AF will take over the pax via CDG.

Makes sense to re-route them through CDG. After all, AF flies very heavy equipment into BEY already.

Just weeks after this announcement:
RE: KLM Stops Serving DAM And AMM! (by KLMCedric Aug 9 2006 in Civil Aviation)

Let's hope their other Middle Eastern destinations are fairing better.

I wonder as well why they didn't do better, I once flew KLM to Beirut and back and noticed a lot of thru traffic from the America's, I imagined the same to AMM and DAM.
Maybe it's the narrow body equipment without IFE and no impressive Business product which pushes the high yield pax away to AF, EK, LH and others.
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

I imagine they will keep TLV/CAI/DXB, these routes have both large O&D markets, tourism, and big connecting markets to North America and Western Europe.

How is RUH/JED faring?

DXB seems to be going from strength to strength. They've established themselves in the market before EK's eventual entrance on the DXB-AMS passenger market.

KL's only KSA destination is DMM. Their other Middle Eastern destinations are KWI, BAH, DOH, THR and AUH.

KLM will stop with the AMS-BEY flights

This was already decided quite a lonf time ago, and in any case before the Israeli agression.

AF & MEA were preparing the reorganization of the CDG-BEY line, with the introduction of a 4th Daily frequency, operated by an Air France aircraft.
AF was supposed to operate a flight leaving CDG late afternoon and returning to CDG as the "red-eye" flight leaving BEY at 02:00AM to land in CDG around 5:45AM in the morning.
But now, it should take a while before we can see this change I believe ...  Sad

As far as know there is no change in the AMS-TLV route (using B737-900).

With the closure of routes to AMM, DAM and now BEY, KLM will be looking for alternative utilization of the B738 and B739 frames used on these overnight flights. KLM has been vigorously pursuing additional Moscow flights, and an overnight AMS SVO rotation might very well be in the pipeline if the airline can convince the Russian authorities to grant them the additional rights.

KLM probably has problems Middle East to AMS because there is no early morning transatlantic flights from AMS, so passengers get stuck with a 4+ hour layover going to the Americas. Because the O&D market is so small, KLM is in a much worse position than AF to the Middle East.

This flight would have mirrored MEA's red-eye to CDG. Does this make any sense?

This flight would have replaced MEA's red eye to CDG.

Instead, MEA would have operated a new late afternoon flight from BEY, arriving at CDG around 10:00PM

KL's venue to Beirut didn't make sense as Skyteam's hub is well served by AF...

However, KL's 737 were not that difficult to fill (they were even upgrading sometimes to 739) + KL's network reach in N America especially the Detroit area thanks to NW was very helpful to passengers

Too bad we won't see the blue bird at night in BEY.
