Does Anyone Know This Beautiful DC-3?

Thu Aug 24, 2006 10:47 pm

Hi All,

I'm coming to the pro's again! I have this photo of a DC-3, or some variant thereof, and I can't find it anywhere. I remember this being the coolest one I'd ever seen, and perhaps the only one I'd seen with the gear doors. I know this made it a specific type, but I'm stuck! I'd love to know the registration, variant, etc.

Thanks Much, Chuck  Smile

Wow...this must be tougher than I thought! I wish I could offer a prize to the person who figures it out.

Did an extensive search on the A.net here(probably done by everybody that is searching) and some other material. Near as I can figure, Alaska somewhere or the Pac. Northwest(per the IFR type weather). An English speaking(American?) airport per the Aero Services sign shown, an American registration on the tail of the DC-3 and the "N" on what looks like a Baron near the office.

Still searchin!

Or you could try posting it here:

There are some spooky people contributing to that thread who may recognise it.  Smile

Those gear doors were used on soem DC3s as a retrofit as they were to make the engines abit more streamlined...I think Pan Am used DC3s with those in their High Andes operation as they also served as protection for tyres from the high altitude operations.....

Ozark and Air New England flew DC3s with this such retrofit......
As for the tail number, I dont know....Im sorry I cannot help you with that...

I have seen those doors on some a/c in the past as well although I didn't know who operated them. Could be used as a clue in narrowing down the search some.

Sorry for the confusion....I took the photo myself back in early/mid-nineties at CLE. I can't find any other shots of it where I may have caught the registration, and I was hoping someone would know the aircraft since it is so distinctive.
I appreciate you guys helping me solve this mystery!

Ahh, Cleveland...that narrows the airport down! If that Aero Services is still around, or any Aero Services, maybe they have the registration still from some possible fuel receipts, etc. Might be worth a try to contact them.

We'll keep tryin to solve the DC-3 mystery!

Although the picture is many years old, do a search for DC-3 and the airport you took the picture at or DC-3 and with a reference to the ex-airlines that had DC-3's with the unique gear covers. Probably this old bird is still flying somewhere in the Carribbean, Africa or South America.

The rear of the red Chevy pickup truck certainly places it somewhere in North America  Smile

Funny! I was going to write the same thing here but something side tracked me as I was writing this out before I got finished. When I came back to the computer, I finished up and sent the post,,,realizing later that I forgot to at that part! Guess I could have edited and added it though.

Cheers,

Yea thats a Dc03 aftermarket mod. The Super Dc-3 (dont recall the C-# off hand) that the USN flew also had these standard, plus a larger surface area, squared off vert. stab. Hope all is well in the round room above C!

According to the FAA registration, Basler Turbo Conversions LLC now owns it, wonder if they'll make a.....   It won't be as nice if they do.
