SXM Takeoffs

Fri Aug 25, 2006 12:21 am

Everyone here at A.net has seen pictures of planes coming in over Maho Beach at Phillipsburg/St. Maarten a million times. OK...maybe not a million.

Question: Does the weather conditions there ever mandate that the planes Take Off going over the beach? I've never seen any pictures of this.

Just wondering.

*Rats. Can't figure out how to post the picture of Air France coming in over the beach.*

It is not very ofter, but occasionaly the weather does cause planes to take off over the beach, i believe there are a few pictures on a.net, but you'll probably have to search pretty hard. Also, i know i saw a video of this happening once, but i'm not sure where. Too bad KLM didn't have to take off the other way when i was there  Sad

reverse take-offs are a pretty common thing at SXM, especially in the very early morning. however, during the busiest time of the day (the middle afternoon), you will see traffic lining up for miles and miles to the south west of the island. a reverse take-off in that situation would put departing airliners directly in the path of all the landing aircraft. (aircraft cannot land in the other direction due to glide slope limitations).

I still can't wait till I get my chance to see planes landing there. I plan on going there this spring if my money allows it. I heard they are adding a threshold to the Maho Beach end.. will this cause problems with spotting?

I do it just like it says. Don't know why you can't.

Do a search on flightlevel350.com and you can actually see a video (via inside the plane) of a over-the-beach takeoff. Pretty cool!  Smile
