CX Crew Layover In NYC--24 Or 48 Hours?

Fri Aug 25, 2006 2:37 am

Just saw the lovely CX 830 pass over my house on her way into JFK and was wondering if the crew overnights for just 24 hours and takes 831 back to HKG tomorrow or if they stay 48 hours...It's a pretty big crew I believe (4 pilots and ~20 F/As if my memory serves me correct).

CX888 (HKG-YVR-JFK-YVR-HKG) --- they stay a night in JFK and then operate back to YVR.

CX830 --- they have 3 nights in JFK.

Lucky them!! That would never happen on any North American carrier who operated a route on a daily frequency.

What is AC's policy?

I think our policy is consistent with most North American policies. Anywhere we fly where flights operate on a daily basis, taking into account contractual and crew rest considerations, you're returning 24 hours later. Great for time off, but a 24 hour layover on the YYZ-HKG cycle is a killer. By comparison, CX allows their crews in NYC a 72 hour recovery period.

On flights with less than daily frequency, we're on the next flight out. Some of the better trips include 48 & 72 hours in PVG/ICN/BOG/LIM (from YYZ). Extended SCL/EZE cycles during our summer (their winter). With the upcoming proposed YYZ-LAX-SYD 777 route, we all expect it will be YYZ-LAX (24hrs), LAX-SYD (24 hrs), SYD-LAX (24 hours) > YYZ.

There have been some oddball layovers in the past such as all day (14 hour) layovers in GRU & LIM. Basically the aircraft and the crew travelled together, but scheduling changes have altered those.

Wow, that seems like a very long layover! I assume the flight is very popular with crews then?

Is the hotel in Manhattan or do they actually stay at JFK (The way you phrased it I wasn't sure if you meant they stay at an airport hotel or NYC hotel)?

For SQ crew who operate the ULR SQ22 SIN-EWR we also get 3 nights including arrival, 4 nights if you count departure as well. One night is standby just in case of AOG or turnback and the operating set has to step down cos of FTL...

Well CX does not have a second group of crew operating on the nonstop JFK flights, so that explains the 72 hours overnight. I believe CX crew used to actually stay at Long Island, but then now they are in Manhattan.

For SQ, they stay at a Mid-town hotel in Manhattan.

For CX's HKG-ANC-YYZ-ANC-HKG flight, I believe that there used to be a crew change at ANC... so one night at ANC, and then another night at YYZ, followed by another night at ANC, and then onto HKG. However, this might have been changed, but I cannot imagine any regulation allowing the crew to operate from YYZ to HKG via ANC with an hour layover.

CX has hired YYZ-based flight attendants, and I understand that they solely operate YYZ-ANC-HKG and v.v. Too long a duty day to operate all the way thru.
