AA 9533 Guantanamo-Fort Lauderdale Today

Fri Aug 25, 2006 3:42 am

According to FLL's flight arrivals website...It shows a flight from Guantanamo to Fort Lauderdale as flight 9533. Anyone have an aircraft type on this and whom it was carrying? What are the rules for a charter flight from Cuba? I know Continental used to run flights from Havana to Miami on 733's. Any info helps thanks.

Probably a military charter from Guantanamo Naval Base...

Check www.miami-airport.com and look at flight arrivals / departures. You will see multiple daily flights between MIA and HAV. Mainly on CO Connection (Gulfstream) and Falcon, with the Eagle having some as well.

Interesting. I found on AA.Com a 9533 operating yesterday from SCU to MIA, but nothing for today listed under that flight number.

I also noticed that the FLL website didn't have a gate assignment. My guess is a military charter.

MIlitary charter, and the Cuba "rules" do not apply to the US Naval Air Station.

These flights are quite common and operated under the Executive certificate for American Eagle, using the ATR 72. Most flights are MIA-HAV, MIA-SCU, MIA-CFG, MIA-HOG, MIA-FLL-Gitmo,

A military charter is the only thing it can be if it's to Gitmo. Gitmo isn't a tourist destination(unless you're a terrorist).

Interesting flight path. It almost looks as though they purposely avoided flying over Cuba (at least from the portion of it that flightaware shows). Is that normal?

Eagle has a contract with the US Navy to provide this air service...it has nothing to do with the other Cuban service out of the US to HAV and other cities for Cuban nationals visiting relatives. What I can't remember is if it is treated as a domestic or intl arrival at FLL....hmmmm.

yes, the flights going to or from Gitmo are not allowed to fly over the Cuban landmass.

There are actually quite a few Cuba-USA flights, the ones to/from MIA as mentioned earlier, and occasionally you will see a DL JFK-HAV and other airlines operating a MIA-HAV flight, or other routes.

Well, at least they let the crew remain onboard. The crew turned in FLL in 19 minutes. Blocked in at 1436 and blocked out 1455.

DL JFK-HAV

I actually flew on that route back in February 2002. The route has since ceased.
