Flight Patterns Right Now In NYC

Fri Aug 25, 2006 3:51 am

I'm by Columbia University righ tnow and am noticing weird flight patterns-- aircraft seem to be crossing Manhattan horizontally headed east, just above us.

I have not noticed this before-- are they landing on Runway 13 at LGA?

landing on 13 at LGA would have them cross up near harlem and the southern part of the bronx. where are you seeing this cross.

I have been on flights landing at LGA in this flight pattern before... not unusual.

Ya that's not weird. You are far enough north by Columbia (Moirningside Heights/Harlem) for that to be rather typical.

An aircraft on final for runway 13 at LGA would cross Manhattan between 134th and 132nd Streets. Zat what you're seeing?

I work at LGA...when I arrived today around 1430 they were indeed landing rwy 13 which is unusual for a week day. They then changed to landing rwy 4 and departing 13. They then changed again to landing rwy 22 and departing 13 and stayed that way for the remainder of the night.

I've taken off from every runway there at different times. The 13/22 combination has been used many times when I've been there.

13 departures with the Whitestone Climb are rather fun.

You guys who frequent the place might know more than me about it, but that doesn't seem irregular to me. I fly a few legs through there every other month, but try to bid trips that keep me out of LGA or PHL.

That's what they're doing. The visual approach for 13 goes up the Hudson until about where Columbia is, and then makes a right turn onto final.

So was that also the approach I saw when I was in the financial district (WTC site to be exact) and I saw aircraft passing over Manhattan to the north? It really looked like they were over Manhattan, and not the Hudson...  confused

Sounds like downwind for 22. You fly it right up the Hudson when coming from the south.

I think the coolest NYC approach would have to be the rare straight-in approach to 13L at JFK...Aircraft basically start over Manhattan and head straight in...I've only seen this done once in horrible fog over the past few years....

You can view the approaches on this site - there is a delay for security. Go back about an hour in time on here and you can find full flight details. They look to be landing on Runway 4 now.

One time I saw a LGA approach where the planes were flying up the Hudson River, made a left hand turn towards New Jersey near but not flying over Teterboro before making a 270 and landing on Runway 13 at LGA.

Late August and Early September is the U.S Open Tennis tourney - IIRC , so the flt paths may have been altered so they wouldn't go over Flushing Meadows as much.
This also is if the weather/winds allow it.

That's also the approach to runway 22. Normally when you see planes in that area, they're going up the river on downwind. Landing on 13 is much more rare.
