New Yorkers like Florida, but MIA is too expensive?

That would be my guess.

The major reason is that many, many, many, many old people - ahem, make that "senior citizens" - that spent nearly their entire childhood and working lives in the NYC metro area decide to move to Florida because of the appealing climate once they retire. However, given the fact that all of their family ties are still in the region, either they or their families frequently travel back and forth.

In fact, I've often heard the West Palm Beach/Fort Lauderdale/Miami area referred to as New York's "sixth borough".

As always, you need to remember that when those stats say "New York" they mean LGA + EWR + JFK, when they say "Chicago" they mean ORD + MDW, and so on. But when they say "Los Angeles" they mean LAX only, and when they say "San Francisco" they mean SFO only.

Also, they don't include Hawaii.

It is even busier when you combine Miami and West Palm Beach, which nearly doubles the figure to around 6M passengers a year.

There are various reasons. There is a ton of VFR traffic. Just about everyone in Miami has relatives in New York and visa-versa, and this is not an exageration. They are also top vacation destinations in both directions - Miamians love New York vacations, New Yorkers love South Florida vacations. And, as a result of the strong family ties, there is a huge amount of business traffic on this route.
