Xiamen Air To Defer 3 Boeing 787 Purchase; Retains Option

SHANGHAI (Dow Jones)--China Southern Airlines Co. (ZNH) said late Thursday Xiamen Airlines, its unit, has changed a purchase agreement with Boeing Co. .

Xiamen Airlines has agreed to buy six Boeing B737-800 aircraft, but will defer its original plan to purchase three B787 aircraft, Southern Airlines said in a statement posted on the Shanghai Stock Exchange Web site...

...It added that Xiamen Airlines retains the option to buy the three B787 aircraft in the future...

IIRC, Boeing deducted these three aircraft from its firm order tally for 787 some time ago?

Correct. Looks to me that though the Chinese government assigned 787s all over the place, Xiamen couldn't actually find anything to do with the 3 they were allocated. Maybe if China would use logic and not politics in allocating jets throughout the system, this wouldn't happen. Mixing 737s and 320s, 787 and 330s, etc. in the smaller carriers makes no sense...

Are the 787s being canceled? What airline will take the slots?

They're not being cancelled. Boeing is working with the Chinese to place the 3 787s with another Chinese carrier. For now it is listed as a cancellation on Boeing's web site.

It makes no sense in the context of a typical standalone, privately operated airline. But in the context of the Chinese airline industry, each of the airlines is not a standalone, private airline. They are all one and the same, just with different paint job  Smile The pay check for the entire labor pool across all the airlines comes from the same exact bank account: the Chinese government's bank account.

Yes China's fleet allocations are just bizarre! Look at China Southern...

6 A300

4 A330

2 747-400 (!)

5 737-500

10 777-200

22 MD-82
13 MD-90

Airbus A319, 320, 321, Boeing 737-300+500, etc. This stuff is crazy. Just a messed up fleet created by politics. Oh, and I forgot the fleet of 41 737NGs... And 28 757s. Just a wacked out, albeit pretty impressive fleet.
