Monarch Airlines And (non) Golf Clubs

Fri Aug 25, 2006 11:18 pm

Hey all

I have a query with Monarch Airlines and their extra allowance for golf clubs.

I'm moving back from spain to the uk in april next year, and will take Monarch scheduled. Obviously after a year out here I have a fair amount of stuff to take home.

I noticed when trying to book flights on Monarch theres an option to get an extra 13kgs of luggage allowance by adding the gold club allowance.

"Golf clubs (including bag) are subject to a charge of £10/€15 per person/item, per flight. The charge is non-refundable and covers up to 13kg of equipment. Any weight over 13kg will be charged at the normal excess baggage rate of £5/€8 per kg."

Now that to me seems very cheap compared to normal excess luggage prices. Now as I dont play golf could I get away with packing my books in a box about the size as golf clubs?

Unlikely.

Most airlines have a special policy to cover sporting equipment upto a certain size.

I would certainly suggest contacting Monarch about moving a lot a luggage and whether there is an option of prepaying - quite often this will be cheaper than just turning upto the airport with lots of extra luggage.

There is of course the possibliity of sending your stuff as cargo - this can be cheaper in some circumstances or more expensive in other - it really depends on how much you intend to bring back to the UK.

I know about sending stuff as cargo. I was just wandering how they decide if what u checkin is actually golf clubs.

Surely no one who sends golf clubs just checks them in, in their golf bag loose? I'd have thought they they would at least be boxed.

Golf bags usually have a top that attaches to the main bag which stops stuff falling out.
People who travel with golf bags tend to have bags more suited to travelling than your casual player.
A golf bag at checkin is clearly a golf bag, and in my travels I have never seen one in a box.

Fair do's

I may be best off sticking to Spanair/Lufthansa back to MAN then as I get an extra 20kgs luggage with my gold card.  Smile
