UA Starts OKC-LAX Non-stop!

Sat Aug 26, 2006 4:38 am

United Airlines 6443

4:17 pm OKC 5:14 pm LAX Non-stop

United Airlines 6442

10:44 am LAX 3:35 pm OKC Non-stop

Wonder how this route will do in the long run.

I have been hearing local radio advertisements courtesy of Will Rogers World Airport in OKC about the new non-stop flight.

Now I just wish that they would start and OKC-IAD flight for connections to Europe and the east coast. As many of you know, the old OKC airport has been demolished and a new bright and beautiful, and larger airport is being erected in its place. One concourse is already up and running and the check-in areas have been built. With the new airport we have seen new service to different cities come about and WN increasing operations in OKC. I hope when the other concourse is finally developed we will see other airlines flying into OKC such as USAir (in their own metal).

Hmmm. Another RJ flight? Should be a decent route as OKC is steadily growing.

Back in the day (1985), I flew LAX-OKC nonstop on a WA 727. The route appeared to do very well.....and as I recall the flight continued on from OKC to TUL. And, of course the return TUL-OKC-LAX.

Edited to add WA route map from 1987:

IIRC, TWA served this route in the 70's and into the 80's..maybe up to the time WA entered it. Going from memory, one flight was a nonstop and one stopped in ABQ I believe. One was usually a 707 and the other a 727-131. Don't recall anymore which was which.

For a while I think one of those continued on to MCI and /or STL at various times over the years.

Best of luck to the new flight..even on an RJ!

Would this be a CRJ-700 route? It seems like it should be since economy plus and first class would make sense on a route that long. ExPlus is pretty much at the same level as economy on the 737s, except for the lack of fresh meals in first class and any IFE.

My grandmother flew this route many times, usually from TUL, making a stop in OKC before continuing on to LAX. It was too hard for her to make a plane change at DFW, so this flight for many years was her only choice.

She flew it on American, on TWA, and finally on Western. I believe they were the last airline to fly it, as it was discontinued after the Delta merger.

My grandmother has long since passed away, but because of this route, I got to see the inside of many different LAX terminals...in fact, T3 might still be the same as when she flew out of there last in the early 1980's!!

I would like to see OKC-Florida back again. Allegiant was going to start SFB, but left totally since they were getting spanked on LAS. Delta did have a CRJ down to MCO, or was it an ERJ, but then killed their network there.

They did well at OKC until WN increased frequency on OKC-LAS. Too many seats to make it worth it to stay.

Yuck! 2.5hrs on a RJ! Pretty soon we might see LAX-IAD on a RJ. Just kidding.
I know most people would rather fly nonstop. I would rather change planes in order to get a bigger plane (also one with Channel 9). That's just me though.

Hopefully it will do really well it gets an upgrade to mainline or at least to the 170. Would also like to see a 170 to IAD as well.

The airport is in the same place it has always been. It's a new terminal that has been built. There's a big difference...

American Airlines ran an MD-80 between TUL-LAX for about a year not too long ago and it wasn't successful. I wonder what makes United think an OKC-LAX flight would be.

I'm guessing UA signed a contract with an OKC company that needs to visit Asia or Australia on a regular basis? Since it is only one daily flight in each direction, using an exPlus CRJ700 would allow it to hook up to a specific NRT or SYD flight and provide First for those folks on a Business Class travel contract.

OKC area in general is rapidly growing along with the income per capita. More people...more ability to fill the planes where they want to go.

Same thing with Tulsa. In fact Tulsa is growing more/faster than OKC.

Different plane. Different city. Different airline. Different time. But other than that, the comparison is spot on.
