Will B747 Have Cockpit Commonality With 787 & 777?

Sat Aug 26, 2006 7:34 am

Will the new 747-8 share any cockpit commonalities with the 787 and 777? I know the 747 is a 4 engine aircraft vrs the twins on the 787 and 777, however I was wondering if Boeing will try to have more cockpit commonalities like Airbus aircrafts have with each other.

I believe Boeing has mentioned they will try and make it as similar to the 777 and 787 as possible. I don't believe it will be as common as the Airbus family, but it should reduce cross-training times for crews.

That is a good idea. It would probably be a good selling tool for promoting the different types to the same operator. Maybe it would help Boeing in having 'package deal' if such a thing exist in selling aircrafts to some airlines. I think the commonality aspect has helped Airbus in selling their lineup to some airlines.

It already does. Although the cockpits look very similar, there differences. It's not as common as switching from the A330 to the A340, but it would not take long at all for a 744 pilot to transition to the 777 and viceversa.
I'm not a real aeronautical engineer, I just play one on Airliners.net.

I've read in the past that the current 744ERF already has a 777-style cockpit. It probably isn't as similar as the Airbus' aircraft but Boeing apparently is working on it. I don't think it's difficult to achieve. If Airbus can do it Boeing also can. As I've said before I see the next Boeing generation aircraft coming with full commonality based on the 787 technology. The technologies used in the 777 were the start of the commonality and now the 787. The 747-8 will probably have a lot of 777/787 similarities and with the introduction of the 787 I think we can expect all newly developed Boeing aircraft using the same technologies as the 787.

That's not too true. B744ER and B744ERF's cockpit features LCD screens instead of CRT on the older standard B744s and B744F. It also includes the digital 3-in-1 standby display. Beside that, it's essential the same as any other B744s.

I stand corrected in this case. Thanks for the correction Andrew.

I can't link you to it, but on http://newairplane.com/, if you go the site for the 747, they have a cockpit photo (though it is subject to change as the design is not frozen). Similarly, they have a pic of the 787 cockpit. I would say the 747 cockpit is shown to be similar to the 737NG. And the screens do look larger.

I have read a while ago that LH demanded during their negotiations with Boeing about the 747-8 that it will have cockpit commonaliy with the 777 and 787.
But that was before the A350XWB was introduced so don´t know if that is still important for LH.
It will forever be a McDonnell Douglas MD 80 , Boeing MD 80 sounds so wrong

The 777 wasn't the start of Boeing commonality. The 757 and 767 had so much commonality they even had the same type rating and that's for two entirely different aircraft.

That would make it more like a 777 cockpit. The 777 does have LCD screens, and some carriers have the 3 in 1 standby display. Its certainly more like a 777 than the earlier 747s
