Kitten In Hand Luggage

Sat Aug 26, 2006 2:48 pm

A kitten was seized by airport staff in Newcastle after a British woman carried it as hand luggage from Iran.

Over the years I have personally seen hedgehogs, snakes, birds, frogs, spiders, cats, dogs, (heard about a pig) and more than I can recall off hand, all brough on board in people bags, coat pockets, etc...

It's illegal and i think people who do so should be prosecuted. I don't think any of these poeple were.

and turned into Supercat?!

I'm sure this woman was fully aware of what was going on and tried to smuggle the kitten into the UK and so not go tru the hassle of import regulations.

Cats or dogs can go through the X-ray machine without any problems.

Some airlines, like Air france, allows passengers to travel with their pets, limited to dogs and cats, weighing less than 5 kg.
Restrictions : your pet must be carried in a vented bag that remains on the floor near your seat.
To ensure the comfort and safety of the other passengers, your pet must remain in its bag during the flight.

Service animals, such as seeing-eye dogs, regardless of weight, are accepted in the cabin.

Don't give the terrorists any ideas!!
On a more serious note, the UK has very strict rules as to bringing in animals, especially dogs and cats to keep out rabies, which is practically non-existant there. The woman was a real idiot and her having a pet on her should have been caught by security at her originating airport.

Travelled for some years between Cairo and France with two cats in the cabin- (mainly on LH and AF ) thanks to very pet-friendly rules those trips went OK .There are many, many pet-owners who don't dare to travel with their pets due to uncertain rules ans fear of damage to animals in the luggage dpt.
it is not the first time animals die due to freezing temperatures in the cargo-hold...
Please respect animals - don't eat them...

Well it might be illegal for international flights but it certainly isn't for domestic. It happens all the time...mainly small cats and dogs in carriers that can fit under seat.

from Delta: "Your pet can travel with you in the cabin for a one-way fee of $50 (to be collected at check-in) when traveling within the United States (except Hawaii), Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda. Pets permitted in the cabin include dogs, cats, birds, ferrets, rabbits, hamsters and guinea pigs. "

none of the critters I mentioned were paid for. and the list you yourself referenced does not mention hedgehogs, snakes, pet insects, etc.

I have seen people bring aboard small dogs and cats all the time. There should be no problem with this!

Actually, it's not that hard to get your pet licensed as an Assistance Animal. You don't need to be blind or handicapped. The procedure is fairly straight forward in most states---and applies to both dogs and cats.

At that point you can likely take it onboard with you. Airlines can deny boarding...but likely won't..because of liability. All airline restrictions in terms of size/wieght/ect. apply.

Personally, I'd rather be seated next to a dog or cat than a child.....!

Not strictly about the aviation aspects of this thread, but allow me two points of information:

Quoting LTBEWR (Reply 8):

Rabies is not "pactically" non-existant in the U.K. It is completely non-existent, period. Hence the ultra-strict regulations.

This is not only wrong, but an appalling thing to say. Try looking up 'effects of x-rays on living tissue'. Then you might understand why your dentist leaves the room even when using low-doses of x-rays on your teeth (and puts a lead shield over your vital organs).

It all depends on parameters and intensity of x-ray.
I would imagine, dose is quite low - most airport x-rays are film-safe these days. Taking x-ray once a year is not an issue - doctors would get expodsed 1000 times a year if not taking precautions. And, increasing risk of cancer in 10-20 years isn't that a big deal for a cat.

Talking about exotic animals, once a guy next row had a cooler with a 2" fish.. FAs thought it was funny.. (it was US MD-80, if I remember correctly)

Maybe he planned a little sushi instead of risking the ham & cheese sandwich the airline wanted to sell him?  cheerful

While working gate in LAS a long while back we had a celebrity who always tried to get a chihuahua on board hidden in various places including her otherwise well occupied bra. A search was always conducted and usually expected by her. It was a game to us and her and a pain for the flight attendants.

As for my own small poodle, she goes on with me all the time after paying the surcharged (even for non-revs) in her airlines accepted "Shepa" bag. TSA is always amused at how without being told she hops in a out while the bag goes through Xray. Film and the pup come out.

Someone brought a small cat/kitten on a flight from DTW-SFO on Northwest about a month ago. I guess the cat got out during the flight and wreaked havoc. Very frightened and angry cat. Couple of people got scratched/bitten. Animal control needed to be brought on board at SFO to catch it.
