German Newspaper:in 2007 NUE-BKG With LTU...

Sun Aug 27, 2006 5:43 am

A german newspaper from Nuremberg (Abendzeitung) reports that a new NUE-BKG service will start winter 2007,linking for the first time Nuremberg with Bangkok, using LTU Airbus gear.(A330 since the runway of 2700 Meters is to short for A340..)
It would most likely be a hub-sytem ,under which Air Berlin will feed interkontinental flights from DUS,MUC and NUE by providing inter-German domestic feeders.
That is a change from previously though focus on the sole DUS airport.
It should be mentioned that Rudolf Wöhrl is from Nuremberg and very much interested to boost local trafic by anouncing new non-stops.

Leo Loy"

Quoting Beaucaire (Thread starter):
A330 since the runway of 2700 Meters is to short for A340..

Well, SJO's 9900 ft runway is more than enough for an A346 to take off nonstop to MAD (which is roughly the same distance as NUE-BKK), despite the altitude of 3021 ft, so perhaps the runway at NUE might still be long enough for an A343.  Wink

Yet I wonder, could LT sustain profitable longhaul routes out of NUE in the longterm, even with the feed from DI and AB?

First of all LTU doesn't even have Airbus 340's !
Second of all I don't think that LTU will be around in 2007!
It will be merged with either Hapagfly or Condor (they are already in talks) or they will just fold!

Let's assume they are not:

Why BKK ? Imagine the yield ! Tickets to BKK are sold around 300Euro+Taxes sometines. Even TG is around 400. Now, if they have to give DI or AB a prorate of around 100 return ? Do they want to fly for 200 Euro NUE-BKK.
This doesn't work. I might only work if they make their own hub.

To make it short - this is an article to be published on April 1st.

Cheapest flights from DUS to BKK in November are on Emirates at about 650 € return all inclusive.Cheapest non-stops with LTU are at 800 €..
Cheapest flights from NUE to BKK are on Air France at 800 € all inclusive -so there is potentially room to offer NUE-BKK at 800 € return all inclusive as non-stop,and remain competetive.
EK are the major competition for LTU on BKK and underbid them easily. But quite some travellers prefer non-stop at premium cost.

Mr Whrl, who owned DI and sold it to AB also owns the majority of LTU.
From the article:
Whrl wants to sanify LTU and get rid off a few of LTU's 26 planes, since only the long-haul market will bring profit in the future. He's talking about working together with AB which has an immense presence on German airports now, so LTU can make use of until now unknown synergies without making economical merges.
AB jets will feed LTU's three hubs in DUS, MUC and NUE and LTU guarantees connections to North America and Asia. AB however will concentrate on the southern Europe market (which LTU will lose when getting rid off their single-aisle aircraft). Whrl (a Nuremberg businessman who also owns a very successful clothing chain) also asks his employees mainly based in DUS for the waiving of their salary.

Now my two cents:
i HOPE that LTU won't disappear from the skies since they have always been my favorite charter airline to choose. The new business plan (to outsource the domestic routes and concentrate on long haul routes) makes sense to me because competition in the charter business got very hard ever since HLX, GWI and EZY were here. Condor works together with GWI who feed their long haul flights, GWI has an immense network of both domestic and european routes (which is DIRECT competition to LTU, for half the price).
AB is Germany's second largest airline and grew even bigger now with the merger of DI. Whrl being the owner of LTU and the friend of the owner of AB would be a bad businessman if he did NOT make use of the synergies he was talking about. The AB/LT network is now directly competing 4U/DE with no other competitors around. We will see, the airline-darwinism will tell us who is the fittest and will survive  Smile  twocents

So, is there the possibility that LT might once more become an all widebody fleet?

In November the net/net on this flight is 365 plus tax.

In November the net/net on this flight is 450 plus tax (AF). But I don't think that this flight can be filled out of NUE. It needs the AB/DI feeder which will kill the yield.
