Gary Airport: Any Rumours?

Sun Aug 27, 2006 7:41 am

Hi

Are there any rumours of service from GYY? Or what airlines could start service, or would do well at GYY?

Thanks,

Well... They received a grant for 650,000 I believe to help attract service. The Airport director Curry said they are looking for airlines like Delta Express to ATL and/or obvoiusly B6 to JFK. That isn't a rumor though. I'm not sure if they have had talks with these airlines either, just read it in the article as airlines they mentioned. I wouldn't be surprised if Allegiant started there sooner or later also.

I have often thought GYY would be a great landing spot for HA. It would be a great way for HA to compete out of Chicago and since HA's flights are direct GYY would be a great O&D spot for HA.

G4 has said that they will not serve GYY until the railroad tracks are fully relocated.

IMO, DL Connection to ATL is always a good start, and B6 could turn GYY into another LGB. The people in the City of Gary are starving for jobs, so I wouldn't expect much NIMBY opposition to new air service. New air service could be a big economic boost to the area... we're talking not just Gary, but the surrounding middle-class and up areas like Schererville, Hobart, Valparaiso, Portage, and the like which are growing by leaps and bounds as affordable alternatives to the Chicago suburbs.

As I've said before, people who flew out of Gary during the Southeast/Hooters days loved the airport, and the GYY routes were always among the best performers. It's just that problems elsewhere at the carriers that served GYY in the past killed the carriers as a whole, even though GYY was one of their bright spots. If a successful major carrier such as B6 or DL Connection came in, I think that GYY could become to Chicago what EWR is to the NYC area.

Would the 767-300ER be able to land and take off there? They would have to need a longer runway and facilities that could handle a 767. They can handle a 757 when Hooters Air brought the plane but a 767 would be too much for the small terminal.

Every airline that has flown an aircraft has experienced a problem with the tracks and having to take off on runway 12/30. I talked with some of the controllers there at the tower and they said that they would get nervous whenever the planes take off from runway 30 and barely make it over the tracks with railcars on them. Southeast Airlines had a issue with the DC-9 and MD-80 taking off from there and I've seen it take off and clear the tracks. That is the only problem with the airport as far as the obstacles for the airport.

Advertisement for bids for the first part of construction moving the EJ+E Railroad from the west end of runway 12/30, will be in Mondays papers. The airport, with the cooperation of the railroad, developed a procedure for Southeast, that would stop any trains using the tracks and reduce the obstruction from 38 feet to 15 feet. The was important, as Southeast only had one MD80 with 219 engines. There are already plans to expand the terminal, but moving the railroad and expanding the runway have first priority on the money.

This was the last bit of info on the subject: GYY Runway Funding Update

From BravoGolfs post I'm glad to learn that resolving the railroad track issue will be done first. Thanks by the way for your post.

One other small point. GYY has hosted the air side of the Chicago Air and Water Show since 1999. This year the main team was the Blue Angles. Labor Day weekend GYY hosts the Gary Air Show. The main team is the Thunderbirds. Interesting and busy several weeks.
