AF And Air Tahiti LAX-CDG

Sun Aug 27, 2006 1:16 pm

AF and air tahiti nui have J class specials (restricted) business tickets for $3k during late march/early april 2007. a few questions...

which one probably started the special first? i'm guessing ATN to try to undercut AF or make up for its single daily flight that leaves LAX in the morning (seems less convienent than an after work flight...they are business tickets). AF does the flight 2x or 3x depending on the day, not to mention the multitude of connections at CDG to europe, middle east and south asia.

why was it started?, LAX-CDG seems lucrative, like people would pay 5k for business easy, even out of pocket for liesure.

which would you take? i would guess AF would be the presumptive choice, since more flights, probably better product (seat, IFE--though ATN is no slouch) and better dedicated lounges.

AF 70 departs LAX-PTT Daily. They only have one daily flight, not 2 or 3.

Not everyone who sits in Business class is actually traveling on business. I travel business class all the time and never once was I traveling for business related purposes.

The Air France Z-class fares have been around for quite a while now. There is an advanced purchase restriction of 50 days on these tickets and any date or flight changes are subject to a USD300 change fee. I don't think TN has anything to do with AF's pricing policy ex LAX, as similar fares are available from other North American gateways.

I've never paid a fee to change my Z class tickets on AF. I purchase them usually out of DXB - could that be the reason why?

Different markets have different fare rules. Z-class fares ex North America have a USD300 change fee, whereas Z-class fares in many Asian and Middle Eastern markets do not have such fees, and neither do they have the strict advance purchase rules.

Do their LAX-PPT flights actually rake that much money in for them in the premium cabin? It appears to be quite a lot of Business Class seats to fill for a route with (seemingly) very little business-oriented traffic. Are there that many high-yield vacationers between the United States and Tahiti?

The number of premium seats on the LAX-PPT route has been decreasing. Barely a year ago, Air France operated a B744 with 13 seats in L'Espace Premiere and 56 seats in L'Espace Affaires. Now that number is down to just 40 seats in C. For the northern winter timetable, the route will operate with an A343 with 36 C seats, albeit with a frequency increase to four times weekly.

You have also to consider that the entire trip CDG-LAX-PPT lasts about 25hrs, inclusing the stop time in LAX. That's a good reason to consider to fly business class if you can afford it, or with a reward ticket

Absolutely, yes. If you pay over $1000 per night for a bungalow on Bora Bora you do not fly Coach.
