Most Operated A/c Types....

Mon Aug 28, 2006 11:19 am

To me it seems logical that the best-seller 737 is and has been the most widely operated (that is, the most number of different airlines) aircaft. But I dont know for sure. The A32X series is operated by many, many different airlines. Then again, the 757 series is very popular among charter airlines- which really bumps up the number of airlines it is operated by...... Does anybody know for sure?

And what about widebodies, specifically?

Business Jets?

Twin-jets: you had it, 737 fam. I would bet the farm on the fact that more airlines have operated the 737 than the A32x. 35+ years compared to 18-19 years.

Quad-jets: 747 fam., then 707, DC-8

Tri-jets: 727 hands down I'd think. Second probably Tu-154, then DC-10, TriStar, MD-11, etc.

http://www.airlinerlist.com has operator lists. Indeed the 737 has and had tons of operators.
In contrast, the DC-9 and especially MD-80 is relatively more concentrated with a few operators. Now the MD-80 is spread out to smaller airlines, but I remember from making the airlinerlist files, in the late 1990s the 1200 active MD-80s were concentrated with only about 30 airlines, with the top operators; American, TWA, SAS, Alitalia, Iberia, JAS and AeroMexico flying most of the MD-80s built.
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?
