Does Anyone Other Than United Have "Channel 9?"

Mon Aug 28, 2006 11:13 pm

Are there or have there been any airlines besides United that offer ATC feed in the cabin? I seem to remember being on an AA flight in the early 90's (757 I think) and hearing ATC on one of the IFE channels. I could be mistaken since it's been a while.

According to United, it is Unique to them, so my answer would be no.

I don't think anyone, but I love it.... I have XM and Sirius radio at home, so who cares about that... Gimme my Channel 9.... Just on my last flight, there was a battle for the AA MIA-ORD flight to overtake our UA flight (Bad wx in MIA caused delay). ATC didn't let him... he was pissed... said he would write this up... our pilot said ATC was doing a great job. We led the way and landed first. My own Telenovela on board a flight.... excellente!

UA is the only carrier to offer inflight communication from the Flight Deck to the ground. This is actually one of their selling points believe it or not.

AA at one time used to show the cockpit on the screens until the Chicago DC10 incident, then after a number of lawsuits, they stopped it.

If Channel 9 is a selling point for United, why don't other carriers adopt that feature? I would love Delta having it...  Smile

Because it's not a selling point. Maybe 1-2% of the traveling public really care about it and the cost to add it or upgrade to it is not there. I had the chance to fly on jetBlue last week and altough the IFE was nice to have it is FAR from my selling point on who I choose to fly with.

How long have UA had Channel 9? Did they have it pre 9/11?

They have had it for at least 20 years if not more. Going to LAX in 1986, we had it on the 757 we flew from IAD.

Also it is not the main selling point for United, but it does help a little.

More for sure... I remember flying on a DC-8 from BDL to ORD back in 1978 that had it.

The earliest I encountered it was 1974 (on my first-ever United flight).

Channel 9 has been around for a long time at UA...70's for sure. I'm not sure the culture at other carriers ALPA groups would allow it....you know if you apply to fly for UA you have channel 9 (at the Captains Discretion). In regards to 'not a selling point'.....more than a few are dialed in during flight...have heard verbal reactions thru the cabin on many flights to something humerous on 9...such as the new DL pilot giving the welcome aboard speech on what he thought was the PA on his aircraft...instead it went out to everyone above 30,000 feet above Kansas that day... Smile
