Did Frontier Belong To Peoplexpress?

Tue Aug 29, 2006 5:15 am

According to wikipedia, Peoplexpress purchsed Frontier. We all know Peoplexpress merged into CO at the end of the 1980's. Then how did Frontier become the independent airline it is now,

thanks

I think the new F9 is just the same brand being used by different investors now.

PeoplExpress purchased the original Frontier in 1985 or 1986,the whole mess was merged into CO in 1987,Feb 1 of that year could be a whole separate story.

Even though Old Frontier Airlines - FAL - was purchased, they were kept operating as a seperate entity - name and AOC.

Thus, when the whole mess went bankrupt, the name "Fronter" fell into limbo.

The new investors were able to pick it up.

cheers

I believe that the parent corporation Texas International purchased Frontier, Continental, People Express and Eastern. The IAH and EWR hubs of the current CO are throwbacks to that family tree. CO used to have a hub at Denver Stapleton but declined to make the move to the new DIA.

Check out the following link to an eBay item I just sold. I believe that I provided a fairly accurate history. F9 is a totally separate airline. The original Frontier's code was FL. People Express acquired Frontier in late 1985, if I am not mistaken and then shut them down in 1986.

PEOPLExpress bought out Frontier for something like $300M, and then proceeded to attempt to switch Frontier to an airline like PE. Cheap on/off-peak fares, buy food, etc. This did not sit well with Frontier loyalists.
At this time, PE also controlled PBA- Provincetown Boston Airline as well as Britt Airways.
As PE kept bleeding cash, they tried to unload Frontier, but Frontier shut down in August 1986. Texas Air Corp acquired the remnants of FL as well as PE's operation and they became part of CO in Feb 1987.
The current Frontier was launched by former old Frontier folks. Glad to see the frontier name out and about again.
Expressjet traces in origins to Britt Airways IIRC.

New York Air (Apple was their callsign) was also part of this rash of acquisition and mergers. They were a LGA operation primarily IIRC. They were a big operator between BOS and LGA and if memory serves, they had to divest that route for anti-trust issues because EA also flew the route and CO/People Express had the BOS-EWR route all tied up.

Frontier fell on hard times quickly in the mid-80's, and in 1985 ended up selling United 5 MD-80's and then leasing them back, and later that year sold 25 Boeing 737's and leased them back. PeopleExpress bought Frontier for $24/share, Texas Air Corp had offered $20/share and the union pushed for PeopleExpress to buy Frontier. While the transition to People Express was taking place in the summer of 2006 an announcement that they are experience heavy losses and is considering the sale of all or part of the company. The following day, United announced they would be interested in buying Frontier. Over the new few weeks, Texas Air offers $235 million to purchase all of People Express, including Frontier which is rejected two days later with the announcement of the sale of Frontier to United for $146 million. This sale is contigent on successful contract negotiations with the unions, including the United's pilots. After nearly a month of negotiations there is no progress and the merger is essentially called off. Frontier is running out of opportunities and on August 24, 1986 operations are terminated. They filed for bankruptcy on August 28, 1986 ending the history of the original Frontier Airlines.

The rebirth of the Frontier Airlines took flight on July 5, 1994 with service from Denver to Bismarck, Fargo, Grand Forks and Minot, North Dakota. While the name was the same as the original Frontier the executives who gave Frontier a new start comprised of individuals from the original airline as well as newcomers to the industry.
